Boden Weekly Review Roundup: So Many Sale Skirts...

As most of you know by now, I have been on vacation since last week. :) Just don't want to tell people until the vacation is almost over, but since we are home and doing fine (finally, it is a L-O-N-G drive from Georgia to Virginia), I can admit to being away. LOL.

Today's roundup includes a look at three sale skirts. As of right now, all of these are in the "clearance" section of the Boden website. I have given direct links to the item home pages, though, so if you were to click on the Boden stock photo you will be taken directly to that page so you can see what colors, sizes, etc. are available, plus any specific measurements you might need.

Shimmering Broderie Skirt. This is from the Boden Limited Edition line, and like everyone else who has bought it (whether at full price or the sale price), it is a definite thumbs up from me. What a delightful skirt...and here is why...

The skirt's material is the most unusual, yet not in a bad way, fabric I have ever seen.  It is soft, slightly shiny, with real eyelet detail throughout.  Under the broderie overlay there is a dark navy blue lining which gives the broderie eyelet detail a bit of depth (you can see the navy cloth through the eyelets).  

This skirt has pockets.  Nicely placed and just deep enough pockets.  :)

The only drawback I can see is the way the inverted V pleat can get a bit "smooshed" looking, instead of being a very starched pleat, it is very subject to what you do with your skirt.  If you are sitting all day, that pleat is going to disappear as fast as you can say "coffee break."  I suspect this is intended, as it is a summery, lightweight cotton, but if you are in need of a permanent pleat, you will either have to starch the heck out the this or you will have to forgo this particular skirt.

It can be dressed down or up, and obviously with the denim peep toe flats and the lace trim tank (both J. Crew), I went with dressed down.  (We were headed to BabyLand, yes, BabyLand, that day.  More on that trip sometime soon...three words...worth the trip.)

I am wearing the size 8.  I would have preferred a longer version, but this limited edition line did not carry long lengths in any of its offerings.  (BTW, there WILL be a Limited Edition line this fall...I saw a blurb about it somewhere...it will include a darker version of the showstopping knitted jacket.)


Shimmering Broderie Skirt. The darker (almost denim colored) version I have is proving more popular, but the lighter silver version is very pretty!


Printed Cotton Skirt. Polly shows us three outfit combos with the multi-colored floral version.  I think it looks great on her, but I can't wait until she gets her skirts from the fall collection in the petite sizes (yes!).  (For all you Boden babes out there 5'4" and under, celebrate the appearance of Boden petites!)


Textured Cotton Skirt. Reminder, I did a review/ootd on this skirt (in navy) on Tuesday. :)


Fruit Applique Pinafore. You can see CW wearing this in the 3-4 size at the same post. (It runs true to size and was a huge hit at church!)

Sunday Stripes and Doodles.

Hi, all!

I have been running around, all over the place, this past week. I have sorely neglected my blog, only updating here and there, and not really giving my normal "all" to the posting and commenting back, but in the end, whatchya gonna do? LOL.  If you had a question for me in the comments, I did try to answer back, but do let me know if you needed something and I didn't get to it!

Speaking of Boden, on Sunday, I wore the textured cotton skirt in a way that will seem familiar, especially if you spend any time over at Egyptomaniac's blog. As soon as I saw her look, I knew I had to try it myself with my navy version of the skirt.

Above is the polyvore of all the pieces of the outfit. I felt very patriotic and feminine at the same time.

I even added in some more pattern with the Lucaya Espadrilles in the Cherry Blossom print.  :)  I normally shy away from mixing three patterns, but no one ran screaming from church when they saw me in this, so I take that as a good sign.

The skirt, as a reminder, is a size 8 Long.  My sister-in-law tried it on, and she is 5'7", and it hit below her knees, by a good two inches.  She has a longer torso and shorter legs, so the opposite of my build.  We determined that if she were to buy this she would need a 6 Regular (the 8 was a bit big in the hips for her).  I love that she was willing to try it on to show how even when two people are near the same height (I am 5'8" tall), they can have very different sizing needs.

I wish I could put a link to this darling pinafore that CW is wearing...but this is all sold out!  (Sad face.)  If it comes back in stock, I will make sure to have a link to it in tomorrow's BWRR.  She is wearing a size 3-4 in this and it is from the Baby Boden line.

I also wish we could bottle that smile.  SO CUTE!

Little ones are so cuddly.  Love it.  :)  She was a big hit at church.


Textured Cotton Skirt. A lot of sizes are still available, and in all colors. Definitely watch for popbacks. The $39 price is decent for what you get, a fully lined, with pockets, summer skirt.

Come Sail Away...Part Two.

I am nothing if not thorough.  :)

Whilst watching my babe slumber this afternoon, I decided I needed to clear out some other photos from my files.  Those poor ootd photos just sit there waiting, and waiting, and waiting.  I blame Boden this month, after all, between the fantastic summer sale and the release of the new fall items, a bit more of my blog's time has been devoted to goings-on across the pond.

I did a post over at True Crew Love on how to score on J. Crew samples (for those of you in a hurry, it is called ebay), and now I want to finish up all possible nautical themed outfits of the day I have had lately.  I guess I have been on a naval expedition, sartorially speaking, anyhow.  (And here's another thing, I have three more outfits that I am planning on wearing soon that all could fall under the heading "seaworthy.")

I am convinced that the people in CW's dance class think I only own dresses, skirts, and tops with some sort of fish, sailboat, lighthouse, ocean animal or scene, or are in the color range of red, white, and blue.  Maybe I will wear a plaid button-down and grungey shorts next week to mix it up, so to speak.

Dress: Anthropologie Castle Lake, Size 6 (or is it small, can't remember).  I have seen people reverse it so the rope tie is in the front, but this way flatters my neckline more.  Belt: J. Crew Skinny Metallic Belt, size small.  Sandals: J. Crew Jolene (or Joellen?) O-Ring Sandals, Size 10.  (BTW, if you have these in a 9.5, ANY COLOR, I will buy them from you, I LOVE these sandals and should have bought an extra pair or two.)

Speaking of nautical/fishy things...an ebay seller is currently selling the above top with bids starting at 6.99.  I love mine, and have worn it over and over since purchasing it in January 2007.  I believe it was called the Ringspun Tee in the fish print. 

And the very famous School of Fish skirt (same basic look as the tee, but in a more stunning fashion) is for sale in a size 12 with a starting bid of $64.99.  These always go out of control, but I have heard it is worth it (and was willing to save my pennies to grab one a while back).

And last, but certainly not least, another ebay seller has this school of fish dress in a size 2.  The current bid is at $51, but it still has a few days to go.  I suspect this one will top out at near $200, if not higher.  Very pretty dress, btw, and my wallet is so happy it isn't a 6 or 8 for sale.  LOL.  :)

Come Sail Away!

Hey, all!

Another short and sweet post, plus a request for my favorite Old School J. Crew super sleuths...I have four items I need identified, and you all were so helpful the last time, I have a feeling I will have figured them all out in no time! :) Yay!

First thing, the outfit of the day from yesterday featuring one of the items that needs a name, not just my made up name of "Harbor Beaded Sailboat Full Skirt." 

It was a gazillion degree minus one yesterday (today it was officially a gazillion degrees and tomorrow is meant to be a gazillion degrees plus one), so I chose to dress up for CW's dance class (and my doctor's appointment) by wearing a very lightweight top, skirt, and sandals.

The top is ancient, Summer 2005, frayed neckline, tissue tee, but one of my all time favorites.  I also own this in pink.  This is *not* the item I need identifying.  LOL.  The skirt is from 2005 or 2006 (I can't remember what the tag said) but it features a delicately beaded harbor scene with sailboats and lighthouses.  Very pretty and very preppy.  I bought it for maybe $40 at Mint Condition, size 4 (turns out a size 4 skirt will fit me as long as the hips are full, the skirt is probably a tad shorter than it is meant to be, but I quite like where it hits on my leg, right at the knee).  The sandals are Miss Trish of Capri for Target, the ones from 2009 featuring the starfish.  BTW, all Miss Trish for Target sandals have a leather sole.  Even the kids versions.  Ask me how many Miss Trish sandals I got this year?  NONE.  They all looked yucky, and I am very glad I bought the couple of pairs I did over the past years...

Proof of baby's dance class.  :)  She brought the duck so he could watch her. 

The doctor's appointment went well.  My world is so funny, one year ago my doctor was telling me I had a hole in my heart that could lead to strokes (and had caused countless numbers of mini-strokes) and yesterday, my other doctor said my heart was in perfect shape. YES!  :)  Still get migraines, but none of the mini-strokes have happened since, and in my world, that is more than enough for me.

So, ladies, what is this skirt? BTW, there is an exceptionally expensive one for sale on ebay, but it is NWT.  Hmm.

And while you are at it, this skirt, too, please?  (Ebay--$10!)

And the montage (so pretty, btw)...what are the shoes in the left hand corner?  I got those for $25 and I have no clue (they are Collection but seem to have man-made soles?).

And then this lovely, I know it is April 2006, but I can't tell what this print is called.  I know it is really pretty, though, and was $20 on ebay.

Interested in more on prints, go on over to Egyptomaniac, who took a look just today.  :)  I happen to agree, prints are the way to go.  (Like you all expected me to say anything else. Snort.)

Boden Weekly Review Roundup: Short and Sweet.

Pardon the pun, but I am doing a review of the Printed shorts, so I couldn't help myself.  LOL.

This is also a short post, so let's call that sweet too.  :)

Let's get the ball rolling:

I bought the printed shorts because I figured a pair of neutral colored and polka-dotted pair of longer-inseamed shorts would be a good thing for my wardrobe.  And overall it is a definite like, but not love.  I would NOT have bought these full priced.  I am happy to keep them at the sale price, but at FP, it would have been a return.

I bought them in a size 8 long, and they fit exactly right, with a longer inseam of 7 inches (instead of the 5 on the regular).  Since I have a really long inseam length (around 34 inches), I have to buy a size up on shorter shorts (with J. Crew's 3 inch inseams, I will buy a size 10)...so having the long option is awesome.  I wish all companies did this.

Here is what bugs about this pair of shorts, though.  I don't care for how the waistband sits or was made.  The waist is essentially right below my navel, making it a fairly high waist, and while I don't mind that on skirts, it bothers me on shorts because that means when I sit the button hits my belly button, which can be really irritating.  The waistband itself seems a bit flimsy, with the button closure seeming kind of cheap.  I don't care about buttons usually, but here I think a hook and eye closure would have been better.

I dressed them up for dinner.  Since I knew it was about three gazillion degrees outside, I knew that there was no way I was going near a pair of pants.  Or a real jacket for that matter.  LOL. 

Jacket: J. Crew from last year, size 6.  Tank:  J. Crew from last year, size medium (have shrunk it in the dryer to fit--love the color, btw).  Shoes: Joley Peep Toe Flats from J. Crew Spring 2009, size 9.5.  Awesome exact match for the tank.  Necklace:  The very famous Bee Glass Bead necklace from J. Crew Fall 2008.  This is the same one that Emma Pillsbury wore in one of the first episodes of Glee.  Like my frog closure necklace from Fall 2007, this necklace is never leaving my jewelry box.


Printed Shorts. Also comes in brighter colors, including blue and green.

Ruffle Notch Neck Top. Louise (of the fab blog Running on Anthro) e-mailed me a review of this top. She says: I ordered the lilac & the pink for £8 each (down from £27) having never given them a second glance at full price and they are so pretty! The tops are 100% viscose and described as a lightweight drapey jersey. Some reviews said they were too thin but I don't agree with that, you can't see my bra through either of the colours and they are intended to be a summer top. The ruffle neckline is lovely fresh out of the packet, I'm hoping they hold up after a few washses but I'll probably put them on a delicate cycle the first few times. The main thing with these is to size down - I ordered a UK6 in both (and yes I've tried them on over my bump!) and they are exactly the same size as the Textured Jersey Tees that I have in a UK8. I laid them out one on top of the other so the Ruffle tops definitely run big. If you like a more fitted style size down, if you prefer a little room stick with your normal Boden top size. The colour IRL is also a true representation of what you see online, the pink is not a coral colour as some reviewers have described, it is a true bright pink and the lilac is incredibly pretty. I can't wait to wear it with my purple daisy print a-line skirt from S/S10! At the sale price I can't recommend them highly enough and the menthe colour is worth a look also. THANK YOU, Louise!


Breton Top. Louise also e-mailed me a review of this top in the navy/white colorway…she says: I know you've have reviews on a few of the Breton Top colourways but I'll just add that I ordered the white and navy for £15 and was initially worried when I opened the bag that it would be too thin and see-through and go straight back. However once on it's exactly the same fit as the top portion of the Stripy Tunic (that I was actually wearing yesterday when these all arrived!) and it wasn't see-through and it's a keeper! Ordered my usual UK8 and I can see me reaching for this a lot with jeans and a long red beaded necklace. It's definitely a spring top, the long sleeves and 100% cotton material would be way too hot on a true summers day. Again I haven't washed it yet but I normally wash all my new Boden items on a delicate wash the first few times. I'd say these are true to size and the little vents either side of the bottom hem allow for a little movement, plus a flash of the cute red braiding!


Notch Neck Shift Dress. Lauren PhD e-mailed me and let me know a bit more about why she loves this dress so (as I agree wholeheartedly with—two of them are in my closet): I LOVE this dress. I am pear-shaped, 6 on top and 8 on bottom in Boden sizes. I ordered the 6 in this dress and it fit perfectly. I also ordered the long length even though I'm only 5'4" and it hit just where I wanted it - at the bottom of the knee, perfect for work. I don't know if it's the tailoring of the dress or what, but it makes me look like I lost at least five pounds, if not more. It even made my tummy issue invisible. I literally gasped when I looked at myself in the mirror. Every woman should have a dress that makes her feel like this. One word of warning for others: I am a 34B and the top fit like a glove, so anyone with a bigger chest would have to size up.

Boden Weekly Review Roundup: Part Two, For Reals This Time.

Her name is Anita, she is local, and she seems to love Boden as much as I do...

Our local CBS affiliate is WUSA-9 and one of my favorite talking heads is Anita Brikman.  I adore her outfits, even if they are on the more conservative side of things (this is DC, though, so keep that in mind).  She always plays with color and texture, and seriously has the nicest skin of any woman of any age.  She is kind of my local "girl crush," if you will.  Anyhow the other day (btw, look at the temp--90 degrees--that was at 11 PM AT NIGHT!) she donned some more Boden.  Yes!  I seriously know not how she felt about the beaded necklace, but the red/silver beads look really chic with her outfit, yet still fun.  So for those of you on the fence about this necklace, I thought an IRL photo of one in action could help!


Beaded Necklace.  Lots of yummy colors.  This ice blue makes me feel a wee bit cooler.  (It is still 90 and climbing here.)

Ruffled Ribbon Necklace.  I obviously have reviewed this, but I wanted to let you all know how it held up in real life, out on the town. But first...

Mr. Dina: (Arches eyebrows REALLY REALLY HIGH.)

Me: "What?  What's wrong, this outfit is CUTE!"

Mr. Dina: (Arches eyebrows.) "That thing.  What is it?"

Me: "What, my awesome necklace?"

Mr. Dina: (Arches eyebrows again.)  (Walks away.)

LOL.

I love it...I think the excessive ribboning, plus the larger mirrored balls give this necklace something I haven't really seen anywhere else.  This is a pretty original statement piece.  It did hold up well on the night out, and was a perfect match for the skirt and because I had on a bright colored tee, the necklace was really highlighted.  I really like the way you can adjust the ribbon to make it shorter or longer depending on the neckline you are wearing.


Ruffled Ribbon Necklace. I believe the brown is sold out, but there are other colors available.

Strappy Gladiators.  Again, I have done a review of these already, but my experience was limited to walking around the house.  I took these out for an afternoon jaunt in the heat and while I was fine enough, I suspect I need to break these puppies in a little longer.  I chose to buy a 40 instead of a 41 because I need narrow more than I need length (which is why I adore J. Crew shoes), but the 40 was a touch too narrow.  So by the end of the day my two big toes has small blisters.  No biggie, but because my feet expanded a bit in the heat, the combo of moisture and extra swelling caused the leather to rub onto my skin.  I believe this is temporary and I do believe that the next few times will be the breaking in period and then I will have the exact right size I need! These were comfy, though, with just enough padding on the footbed and it sure was nice to feel like my foot was securely in place (often I feel like my feet will fall out of shoes very easily).



Strappy Gladiators. Still some sizes and colors available.

Downtown Heels.  These are in a size 41, and had I bought a 40 for width (which is probably better as the 41s are a touch loose), these would have been FAR TOO SHORT.  Even in the 41 my big toe hangs off a bit (but nothing that even really matters).  Having said that, these are really comfy, nicely padded footbed, sturdy, yet modern heel, and many holes in the strap itself for adjusting width (which is its saving grace in my mind).  I also loved how nicely this tan color worked with the Retro shift, an exact match.


Downtown Heels. I think the price is very decent for what you get.

Shimmering Broderie Skirt. Two reviews...first AudreyS had this to say a week or so ago (in a blog post comment): I just rec'd the shimmering broderie skirts -- at $28 I had to get both -- and they are GREAT.  Not "sexy" like the J.Crew pencil skirts, but more "pretty" in the way that I now associate with Boden skirts and dresses.  Medium weight cotton, A-line-ish, very TTS for Boden which for me is one size up from J.Crew.  And second, I just received mine two days ago, size 8, and it is definitely a beautiful skirt.  I adore the color more than anything, kind of like a denim shimmery color, has great depth and in the right light looks very luxe.  (I have the same color as Edda is wearing above.)  The fit is fine, tts for me for Boden (I tend to wear size 8 with them in skirts).  I wish it had a long, but the length is exactly the same on me as it is on Edda.  The pockets were unexpected, but yum and bonjour!  It pairs well with stripes, especially red stripes.  I have to show you a pic of me wearing that combo sometime, kind of like a patriotic chic look.  :)

Riviera Dress. AudreyS also gave a written review of this one: Also got my THIRD Riviera Dress (WH246), which seems a steal to me, at $49 (down from $98).  Also true to size for Boden.  I have the Blue Bloom, China Blue spot, and now have added the Pink Bloom, which is actually a pretty red, not pink (which is better, IMO).


Fringed Tweed Jacket.  Very popular jacket this season.  I have some friends hoping for their size to pop back, but until then, enjoy this written review by AudreyS: The Fringed Tweed Jacket (WE292) is on its second markdown, from $188 to $56 -- definitely a steal!  I have this in the pink multi from awhile back (after reading Tabitha's review).  Consistent with her and Ema's reviews, this jacket runs large, but only about a half-size large.  I am a 2 in J.Crew jackets, typically a 4 in all Boden tops, and I got the 6 in this jacket.  Slightly roomy and boxy, but fine.  After this last markdown, I also ordered the blue in a 4, so we'll see how that goes.  The cream is also pretty, but too similar to the J.Crew tweed jacket from last year for me to purchase.  (Audrey, thanks again, and if the blue doesn't work out, let me know, I have a friend who wants that color in that size, possibly!)


Tropical Maxi Dress. AudreyS did one last review of this one, plus I have some thoughts on the purple I received two days ago.  AudreyS first: I will definitely second your vote for this dress -- I got the fuchsia during one of the earlier promotions when it popped back in my size.  So glad you reviewed it b/c at 5'2", I have never bought a maxi, but this one is the perfect length and fit.  My thoughts second on the purple:  It fits exactly like the graphite, but is obviously a much more punchy combo.  I don't mind, obviously, since I adore color.  The fit is wonderful, still a few inches above my ankle (I am 5'8" and ordered the 4 regular--can't order 4 tall as I have a petite torso), but overall a wonderful dress that I have great plans for this summer (and should definitely come with me to Florida in September).


Textured Cotton Skirt.  If you all were on the fence about this skirt, I suspect Dr. Egyptomaniac will PUSH you over it...and how.  I even am going to steal her idea and wear this skirt (in navy) with a red striped tee.  Yum. 


Essential Short Sleeve Scoop Neck.  As seen on the lovely Polly here in this blog post.  BTW, on Wednesday with the next installment of BWRR, Polly and Fiona have even more reviews to come.  :)

Mini-Boden:

My boy, he is certainly apt to imitate art.  LOL.  He actually picked out this tee himself (he also has the shark one).  (I also let him choose three tees from the fall line.  I wouldn't have picked the ones he picked, but at 4, he can make these decisions for himself, I guess.)  This top is in the 4-5 size and fits fine, if a bit loose.  But in my mind a bit loose means he can wear it longer, so all good for our household budget (which admittedly has a larger % going to clothing than may be normal.  Ha.)  :D


Big Print T Shirt. I don't believe much will be available, but watch for popbacks.

Again imitating art.  Silly Rex.  :)  The embroidered deep sea fish (I think the Angler fish???) is well-placed and stitched and I feel like outside of a bit of wear over time will manage to look decent...well as much as young boy's clothing can ever really look.  Again, size 4-5, and while a bit oversized, it's okay.


Big Applique T Shirt. Definitely close to selling out, but watch for popbacks.

Rex has a thing for skull and crossbones, and I have a thing for sturdy childrens clothing, so together, these printed shorts hit the mark.  We bought a size 4, and they are definitely too big, especially at the waist.  Rex could care less, he would wear them as low as a plumber if I allowed him to but there is a drawstring waist, so you can cinch it to make it fit properly.  These will definitely last him for a long while, I honestly could see him in these until he is 7!


Board Shorts. Definitely also close to selling out, but I highly recommend getting them on popback, if only for the sheer number of years your son would be able to wear them.
