OOTD: Navy, Brown, Grey.

Hey, all.  Happy Monday!

So the Boden Weekly Roundup has not disappeared, promise.  In reality, there are just so many reviews/ootds recently both here and at my blog friends' blogs that it is going to take a lot of time to get the post together.  It will be a Super BWRR, ready to conquer all other BWRRs.

It turns out my lateness is less of a big deal, too, since Boden is clearly waiting forever to put the fall/winter stuff on clearance.  Last year the sale happened within the first week of December, and here we are in the second full week of December and no sale is in sight.

There is some talk over at the Facebook page for Boden that since their shop will be shutting its doors for a little while next Sunday, the 16th, that must mean that the sale will be happening that day.  It's definitely possible since I remember that also happening last year.

What makes this year different from last year is that this year's collection is selling well, often to the point of selling out, so Boden may not feel that an earlier sale is justified since people are buying the items up with only a bit of a % off, instead of waiting for a better deal.  There are items that are not selling well, at all, including the top (Lavish t-shirt) that I had in my ootd post from last night, but all that means is that Boden is offering it for a bigger percentage off right now (near 50% off, in fact) to maybe drive a few more sales of those tops.

When clearance does happen, anticipate that if you love something and it is sitting in the pink "low stock" checkmark territory, it will not stay that way long.  Those pink checkmarks disappear fast and become "out of stock" quicker than you can say "Johnnie Boden."  If you have your eye on something with a blue "in stock" checkmark, you are probably okay to wait a bit.

Also, if the item you like has been selling well, it is also unlikely that Boden and co. are going to reduce the price by that much, there have been items in the past that have sold so well that the price only went down by 20-30% in the clearance sale.

Okay, blah, blah, blah.  Let's bring on the outfit full of neutrals.

Winesday was on offer last week, for the first time in forever.  My brother and I try to make it weekly, and if we miss it too many weeks in a row, we feel pangs of withdrawal.

The outfit is all neutrals, but I kind of dug the play of different shades together.  I am all for following sartorial rules, but in this case, I feel like the deep navy combined with black, grey, and brown works.

Oh, who am I kidding?  I had to get some color in there.  ;)  Now I didn't actually wear this outfit inside Whole Foods since it would have been too warm to have the coat on, but I did need some sort of cover up for the drive there.

This coat is the Rose coat from Boden's spring/summer Limited Edition line.  I would never be able to wear this coat in the spring or summer (too warm), but I will happily wear it when the temps drop below 50.

(I see this is gone from the clearance sale from last summer, but there are still a bunch of its sister, the Rose Dress, available for sale.)

See?  Smoothed hair.  ;)  This is outside my house.  I am in my street.  Fortunately my neighbors didn't even notice, but I live on a block full of slightly insane people (including us, btw), so I think even if they did notice, it wouldn't bother them. 

Vintage Ponte Dress.  This dress is almost all sold out in the smaller sizes, especially in the navy.  I bought the dress to try it on for the blog, with the thought I would be sending it back.  Then I got it and realized that the dress fits very well and is so pretty and comfortable, I decided that I would just sell a dress or two from my collection (ridiculous collection, really) to make up for this purchase.  (I am going to the consignment shop tomorrow, have a BIG box full of stuff to sell).

I bought this in a size 6 since most of the stretchy type fabric clothing from Boden fit me in my smaller size.  This was definitely a good choice, since the 8 would have been far too big in the bust and waist.

The length is shorter than it appears on the model, but I have a high waist and long legs, so almost all dresses and skirts are shorter on me than other folks (plus they probably gave the model a lengthened version). 

My feet only look this big from the side.

I added the sequin belt to this dress, which Boden did with their catalog shot.  I had to buy this belt in a size medium because (surprise!), it sold out in all the other sizes.  The medium is big on me, but I am just doing what the model in the catalog does, I am wrapping the end into the belt, which looks kind of nice.  Another thing with the bigger size is that I can wear it lower on my hips, which I may have to try with some of my denim.

Don't let your husband zip up the back of your dress if you are taking photos from the back.  (There was a hook closure that he missed--my brother fixed it at the store). 

The dress has the back zip, which is fabulous if you have a bigger bust and find side zips/no zips impossible to deal with.

I do have plans to wear the dress as you see it above.  (I really love the daintiness of the sixties heels with the dress.)  It was just too chilly last week.  Maybe this spring?

Boden Weekly Review Roundup: Belting Helps!

Sorry about the delay in the Review Roundup.  There isn't all that much on offer today, just a few reviews, but getting my own act together has been a bit of a challenge.  I was all geared up to get the post published yesterday, but I had one of my "the barometric pressure is dropping" migraine attacks, and though I took my medicine, it didn't take effect quickly enough for me to get the post published before we left the house for the day (we ran errands all yesterday afternoon).

Anyhow, here it is.  Enjoy!!!

Regular Boden:

Vanessa Dress.  This dress may actually be a Boden Limited Edition dress, but since it is from the fall line (in which they said the Limited items were dispersed throughout), I am calling it "regular Boden."  They have since reclaimed the Boden Limited Edition line and now have it as its own thing again, so had this dress been introduced two weeks ago, I suspect it would have been part of that line (as were its precursors, the Evie and Stella Dresses).

But none of that matters right now. :)

This dress is a size 6 Long.  I nearly went with a size 8 Regular, but after reading the few reviews and checking out the measurements, I decided the 6 Long was my best bet.

The dress looks most lovely with a belt, heels, and necklace.  I don't think this dress can ever be worn casually, with just flats and no jewelry.  (Although they did style it without the belt on the beautiful Helena Christensen, the dress looked far better on me with a waist cinching belt--hence the title of today's roundup).

Here it is unbelted.  It is fine, of course, but I would only wear it like this if I had a sparkly cardigan on top (I immediately thought of the showstopping knitted jacket as the perfect topper, btw).

The color is much darker and a deeper teal than it appears on-line.  I far prefer this deeper shade, it reads more elegant and dressy than the lighter aqua teal you see in the stock photo.  I also believe this teal is a more universally flattering color.  However, it begs the question...why would Boden knowingly keep the stock photo of the lighter shade up?  Hmm.

The long falls right to below my knee, but the waist is still right below the bust.  I think if your posture is not super-straight, it can appear that there is a belly because of the way the ruching is placed on the front of this dress, but in my opinion, it doesn't look horrible, and since I like curves on a woman who has curves (some women just have them, ya know?), I feel like this dress celebrates the lines of the more endowed but also creates visually lines of curves on women who are not so "curvaliscious."  ;)

This is probably the best shot of the color, but it still is not exactly right...it is still a wee bit darker and a tiny bit greener than it shows here.

This detail shot also shows the reason why I like the belt for this dress...right there at the waistline, the seaming is a bit puckered, and while that may only bother 0.07% of you all, it really bugs me.  Now I am not a crazy lady who will return it because of this (Helena's version has it to, for instance), but I am the crazy lady who will hide it through belting or covering (with a cardi or jacket).

Wanted to point this out to you all, just so you knew about it in advance of receiving it.


Vanessa Dress.  Most sizes are available in all colors.  Great price ($94) with the 20% off (since it is a stackable coupon).  Made from a silk jersey, so very lovely fabric suitable for work and dinners out.

Cable Knitted Dress.  Please do go to the original review of this dress for why I decided to exchange the original one I bought for this one. 

Finally this dress arrived (long, slow boat from the UK manned by barely functioning monkeys) in a size 6 Long.  What a difference three inches at the hemline make!  I far far prefer how this one looks on my shape, less ice-skater chic and more wintertime wonderful.

Belted makes a big difference, too, the dress looks much more like it looks on the model in the product shot, which was the look I was aiming for initially.

This dress looks okay unbelted, but I don't know that I will ever style it this way as I think it looks a bit too "grey sweater dress blob" to me.  The belt really does give the look that little bit of something something...


Cable Knitted Dress.  This one is proving to be popular, many sizes and colors are selling out, especially in the smaller sizes.  If you like the navy, it can be had at $82 (after the 20% is applied).  This grey is a touch more expensive.  The red is the most costly. 


Jersey Tea Dress.  Egyptomaniac gives us a look-see at this very pretty dress, styled impeccably with a pair of Frye Boots and a blush cardigan.



Bloomsbury Top and Ankle Zip Skimmers.  Lou gives us a whole outfit centered around these two beauties.  I quite like the skimmers with the cute peep toe heels.  :)


Wool Midi Skirt. I was e-mailed a couple of reviews from Margaret, a blog friend.  She writes of the wool midi skirt:

I really wanted to love these, but no dice. The skirt is either too long or too short. It hit on this weird place on my calf and made me look very squat. The skirt was also too straight, so it looked weird. The wool was very nice, though and it seemed like the pieces would have lasted a very long time.

Everyday A-Line Skirt.  Margaret also e-mailed a review of this skirt:

I am 5'4" and had to buy this in a long to get it to cover my knees. I got both denim colors and they are good and thick in person. The skirt is much less a line on me than on the model, though, like an just barely tapered straight skirt. Runs true to size. This skirt, with the button and zip closure will give you a bit of a tummy from a side view, unless you are very slim. But it's quite flattering from the front and rear, and I liked it enough to keep them.

Dressy Mix and Match...

Hi, all! Thank you so much for your sweet thoughts and e-mails over the past week or so. :) MUCH NEEDED...I definitely have left Funky Town, its population is now zero. LOL.

Real quick, I wanted to let you all know that I am having surgery to repair my "hole in my heart" on December 14, 2010, which is one week away. I am not nervous, but I am a teeny bit anxious. Some of my bloggie friends have reached out to me and told me their stories of people they know who have had this surgery so I feel great to know that it is usually a very easy procedure, but it is still my heart and all.

Turns out that I have an ASD, which is a birth defect, and not just the flappy opening between the atria not completely closing at birth (which is what we thought I had--also known as a PFO). If you want to read more about the differences between an ASD and PFO, check out this link for more info. The ASD explains why I have continual blood flow between my right atria and my left atria (also known as a right to left shunt, which I explained in great detail at the "hole in my heart" post which I linked to in the last paragraph), and which makes me understand why I have been susceptible to "mini-strokes" and why the cardiologist was willing to get me in for the heart repair so quickly! (I am even having my surgery before BRET MICHAELS!!!)

Okay, enough talk about my health. Let's move onto OUTFITS!!!

Mix and Match Packing List! by dinagideon featuring a vneck cardigan

Above is the polyvore from my trip to Mississippi and Louisiana that I talked about in my last post. For more info on how this polyvore works, check out the post for the info on how I mixed and matched the pieces together to help me have a well-chosen plan for my ten-day trip. Today I will focus on how I mixed the pieces to create dressier outfits (my last post was on the casual outfits).

Worn to church the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  I know that at my church people dress up, but nothing compares to Southern Baptist church services.  Everyone is turned out just so.  It is very lovely to see, the parade of finery and thoughtful, well-cleansed faces bright and fresh.  :)  Love it!

The outfit consists of pieces #5, 2, 9, 21, and 17.  You have seen the jacket, the dress, and the shoes before, but the belt and necklace are new.  I love the way the grey worked with the purple and browns.  I didn't know if the colors would look ghastly together, but in the end, it all worked.  The belt is the suede floppy belt and I bought it in a size small so I could wear it at my waist.  If you want a more "floppy" effect, buy up a size.  I don't want a floppy effect, so I was great with the size small.  The necklace is the knotty pearl necklace and I just love how a fairly inexpensive piece of costume jewelry (I got it on super-sale) can make an outfit look extra-special.  (Well, the velvet Bella jacket helps, too...lol.)

I dress for Thanksgiving dinner.  Something about dressing for dinner speaks to me, so I was happy to oblige, even if I was a bit "over-dressed."

This outfit consists of pieces #4, 2, 9, and 19.  This dress was wrongly identified as the super 120s banquette dress on ebay when I bought it...it is actually the stretch flannel banquette dress from last year, but in the end, I don't really care.  At the price I bought it, I was happy.  This is in a size 8, and sadly this means that the top is very loose and the hips just fit.  To counter this, I cinched the belt REAL tight and wore a cami on top and wore spanx on the bottom.  It was worth it, though, my super-beautiful sister-in-law complimented my outfit, and that made me feel great!  :)  The necklace is the Charlotte Statement necklace by Stella and Dot that I was able to get (FOR FREE) after CW's Stella and Dot birthday party (CW received a LOT of jewelry for VERY good prices).  If you would like to order Stella and Dot, I can put you in touch with Rachel, who is my Stella and Dot stylist.

This is an outfit I wore at the very beginning of the trip when it was SUPER hot and I needed to cool down.  The first photo shows how I took shimmer paisley dress and winter-ized it and this photo shows a nice early fall option.  It does look like I am wearing a top and a skirt, but I actually just layered a cami over the dress.

These pieces are #25, 9, 5, and 18.

Finally, this is an outfit I wore the very first night of the vacation.  We were going all fancy with a fixed price dinner at a yummy New Orleans restaurant and I wanted to match by dressing up.  It was hot that night, so the cashmere and the wool skirt were a *bit* much, but the restaurant was cool enough, so I didnt keel over in my crawfish or anything.  :)

This outfit consists of pieces #24, 17, and 1.  The tee would have made it into the polyvore BUT polyvore has a limit of 50 pieces!!!  (Did you all know that?  And the numbers that I used to label the pieces count as items!  Shakes fist at imaginary owner of Polyvore...)

CW was also dressed up and ready to go.  Love the pink and brown!  :)

A Little Blue...Good Time to Show Off My Blue!

I have had a rough week. Insanely enough my finding out what I exactly suffer from in regards to my terrible migraines isn't even what had me down this week. :P

First, the news regarding my PFO (please see this post for more info on what that is).

Trust me, the next paragraph or two will make more sense if you do read it. :)

I definitely, 100%, there is no doubt in my mind, HAVE a HUGE hole in my heart. In fact, based on my trans-cranial doppler with micro-bubbles study (link takes you to a PDF), I have the absolute worst possible grade you can receive regarding holes in the heart. The hole I have basically is open for business, even when I am at rest. That means there is always a bit of the bad blood mixing in with my good, oxygenated blood and because of that, my brain is receiving bad blood a lot of the time. There are two tests they do...the first test is at rest, which I received "uncountable bubbles," or a "curtain," which equates to a grade 5+ (plus). The grades start at 0, which means no bubbles pass through (there is no PFO if that is the case) and go all the way to 5+. When they gave me the second test, I needed to replicate exertion, so I had to blow into a tube (called a valsalva maneuver). This test is normally done because a lot of people will experience more bubbles passing from their right atria into their left atria under conditions of exertion, if they have a PFO. (This second test is valuable especially for those people who have a PFO but the PFO did not register on the first test.) Me? Oh, no. I mean, yes, I had more bubbles passing through, but yep, the bubbles were still uncountable, and still a curtain, and therefore still a Grade 5+. I think this is unfair, I think there should be a distinction...I want to be a 6, darnit. LOL. (See I can still laugh about it!)

My neurologist then moved on from that to my MRI results, which were...da da DUM...normal (enough, my hubby may disagree). :) GREAT, I'll take it. But wait, I am not done...

Turns out that even though I have a normal MRI, my neurologist suspects STRONGLY (bold-face font, thank you very much) that I have suffered from "mini-strokes" already based on my symptoms while having my AWFUL TERRIBLE migraines this summer. Turns out that a prolonged aura (my worst ones have lasted for hours) with partial blindness in my right eye and difficulty walking (walking into walls and falling over from standing) and not being able to speak properly are not typical and worry her.

With my MTHFR disorder (I clot blood easily), she is not putting my health to chance and is INSISTING that I get my PFO closed before my "mini-strokes" turn into big, land you in the hospital STROKES. I have an appointment with a local cardiologist in a few weeks, and at that point I will know more about when and where I will get my hole closed. YAY!

See why I am not blue about my health? This, albeit a bum-tastic thing to have lived with, is nearly done. THANK GOD.

My blue-ness is more on me and feeling like I can't get along with people. Not my friends, nope, my family. Fortunately I am pretty adept at figuring out familial issues, but it still stinks feeling down. (And hence, my absence from the blog, couldn't get motivated to be happy for you all...boo!)

So as an HOMAGE to blue, I give you two blue outfits I wore this summer. :) Enjoy!


Sizes:
Dress: Size 8. This is the knotted starfish dress and I must have tried this dress on five or six times in multiple J. Crew dressing rooms. The 8 always fit best (even if it is a bit short--but hey, it's summer and I was going to a picnic). I just couldn't pay full price. It went on sale, but even on sale, I thought it was too expensive for what it was. When I was able to get an extra 20% off, I bit, and ended up getting it for around $45.
Shoes: Size 10. I believe these are some Kenneth Cole Reaction sandals. They are sparkly!

This is the outfit as I wore it. Below is what I had originally intended to do.


Sizes:
Belt: Size small. Elastic Blossoms Belt. I adore this belt, and love the way it looked here. But for a picnic, nah. That and the heels are better for a date.
Shoes: Size 10. Yummy, love how the light lavender look like a neutral. I believe these are the patent Elodies from Summer 2009.

Yes, I am full aware of how ridiculous the kids look. Baby CW is for sure doing a "staying alive" dance move. I think she must love the disco. That is a starfish crewcuts top. Yep, another mommy and me outfit. ;) Rex's sunglasses kill me, too. I didn't know 3-year olds could look like cops. LOL.

And notice how the "knotted" in the knotted starfish dress is spangling out onto my upper-arm. Awesome. Not. Fixed that right up before I left the house, promise.


Sizes:
Dress: Size small. This is the Marin Dress and I LOVETH. Simply put. I know this was not insanely popular, but I found the fit, fabric, and comfort perfect for my life. I wore this out and about doing normal SAHM things. Drewablank wanted me to get the x-small, but I found that it fit too well at the hips, thereby making the skirt portion shorter. Prefer it to only be "just" so short.
Shoes: Size 10. Just plain old flip-flops from J. Crew.


This lighting better shows off the color. :)

It's Grey Cardi Time!!!

Ooh, I love it when I can tie seemingly unrelated outfits together in one post, even though they were worn four or five days apart. Woo! Score one point for efficiency! :)

Light Pewter Tartine One Way... by dinagideon featuring J Crew

This first polyvore is of the outfit I wore today. Yes, I wore this outfit to: take the baby to the babysitter (it was a Rex/Momma day), take Rex on errands with me to the bank, CVS, Starbucks, and Giant, take Rex to the Doctor for his 3-year appt. (he weighs 41 pounds and 39 inches--woah is the right reaction), take Rex to Pentagon City so I can do a return at J. Crew, then to Johnny Rockets (he is obsessed with the ketchup smiley faces they create), stop a minor-major meltdown in that mall (ooh, bad idea to change his pull-up BEFORE he eats), and finally make our way back to pick up the baby and come home. Yes, it was a full day, but here is my secret, as comfy as I felt in this outfit, I immediately went to the bedroom upon getting home and changed into "lounge" pants and a tee-shirt. :)


Sizes:
Cardigan: Size Medium.
Dress: Size 8. This is the Silk-wool watercolor leopard dress from J. Crew that I got on sale. I am glad I didn't return it...I felt special in it, but because of its fairly sturdy material, it held up well to the day.
Belt: Size Small.
Tights: Size Medium-Tall.
Boots: Size 9.

HeidiG. thinks I should have done a "Mid-Century Mom Takes Her Son to the Doctor" post but I totally forgot my camera. Plus I think the doctor, as cool as he is, may have thought I was a tad off my rocker. :)


So even when I have to take the pics of my outfits myself in the handy full-length mirror, the kids still manage to get into the photos. Love that Rex knows how to curl his tongue. Baby CW hasn't figured it out, but since Mr. Dina and I can do it, chances are she will be able to do it, also.

Scalloped Zipper Cardigan... by dinagideon featuring J Crew cardigans

The second outfit's polyvore is from Saturday. I wore this decidedly more casual outfit to go to Costco, the mall (another return--I am trying here), and dinner. Very comfy...love that for its ease factor, the Scalloped zipper cardigan gives the outfit a little embellishment that keeps the outfit from being frumpy...which would normally be possible in any outfit that includes crocs, no matter how cute said crocs might be. :)


Sizes:
Cardigan: Size Small.
Top: Size UK 12, US 8. This type of top usually runs tight through the rib cage and shoulders, ladies, so please bear that in mind when purchasing these cotton-silk tops from Boden.
Pants: Size 10. Purchased at Target during the awful snowstorm in which we became pack-mules to get our kids and ourselves out of our neighborhood in order to get electricity and heat. :) I had only brought one pair of pants and I realized I just. couldn't. live. with. one. pair. of. Men's (!). sweatpants. Seemed wrong, you know? These are cute and functional.
Shoes: Size 10.

Happy Valentine's Day with a Pink Sequined Heart and a Little Red Cord Dress...

Hey, you all!!! As the heart on my tee professes, I want to wish each and every single one of you a "Happy Valentine's Day!" Now, I am not the biggest fan of this day...but it sure is fun to have an excuse to wear pink and red and sequins, etc., etc.

And unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know I haven't really gone anywhere for the last week, SO Valentine's Day 2010 is especially awesome because we braved our street (as of this morning still unplowed and slippery) to go out!!!

First up is my lunch outfit. Technically I should show you this second, but I really want the more "holiday" themed one first. :) The polyvore is above (and once again, my sweet set that I entered into a polyvore contest didn't win--sob, sob--just kidding, the ones that won were super-awesome).

Yes, the tee is a girl's crewcuts tee. In a size 14!!! Basically crewcuts size 14 equals a woman's size 4 or small 6. :) Yippee!!! I am now the owner of two crewcuts tees in a size 14...and they both fit very nicely. What I like best about them is that they aren't super, super long like some of J. Crew's tees. I often find that the extra length in the regular J. Crew tees hits at a weird place on my hips, and if I am not careful with the pants I choose, I can look very VERY pear-shaped. This tee hits right at my high hip, which if I had a preference, would be were all my tops would hit!

The name of the tee, btw, is the sequin heart tee. It also comes in black, and it appears that there are still size 14s available (yet they are on backorder).

The sequins in the tee are well-secured, so I have no OCD issues with them. Thank goodness. I guess they tack them on more securely when they put them on children's clothing.


Here is the tee without the cardigan. It is a very close color to my skin tone, but I think it is just a shade or two off, which helps keep it from appearing too close...that said, I prefer wearing it with a cardigan.

By the way, I am not trying to be all edge-y by wearing dark socks with this outfit. I was under very specific instructions from Mr. Dina not to take too long getting changed from the outfit I wore to church (see below for pic of that outfit), so to save time I wore the tights under the jeans. It doesn't look too terrible. :)

I love how baby matches but her patterns kind of clash...oh, to be 1 1/2 and not care what is in and what is out.

And this is my "festive" church outfit. :) I bought this in the fall of 2007. Does anyone know what it is called so I can try and find it for polyvore?

BTW, Rex (seen in the background!!!) was FANTASTIC at church today. It was even an extra-long sermon with the priest talking about the Bishop's Lenten Appeal for more time than is necessary at the "family (read: babies)" mass.
