ROYGBIV: Green...Not Just for St. Patrick's Day.

Good Monday evening!  (And Happy Memorial Day!)

I can't get over how quickly May has flown by...at the beginning of the month I thought, "oh, I have 31 days in this month, plenty of time to get all sorts of things done."  And then I barely accomplished half of what I wanted to do.

Does that happen to you all?  I am in no way mad at myself for not getting all the things on my work list done, but I am definitely noting in my notebook of life that all the best laid plans often go to waste.  I guess that is why cliches exist, to prove that they will one day happen to you, too.  So watch out!  (The actual cliche is a mouthful, btw: the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.)

A week ago to the day I published the ROYGBIV post on yellow, so I probably should get around to doing green already.

I heart green so much, and wear it all the time.  Something about its earthiness appeals to me.  Since I live next to a forest, it should be obvious that I want green in more than just my wardrobe.  (The walls in my bedroom are lime green.  I could go on and on...)

It's not just the verdant shades of the trees that I adore, either...all those yellow-greens and blue-greens are wonderful, too.

Today I am showing off two outfits in probably my all time favorite shade of green, moss green, a little dark green with just a hint of yellow.

Jacket--J. Crew Factory. (Called the Celtic Country jacket when it was in the retail stores in 2006.)
Top--Target, Mossimo Striped Tee.
Pants--Inc. (Macy's).  These are a pair of black pants that allow me to feel like a normal person even though I may still have an extra five inches on my hips because of postpartum"padding."
Shoes--Missoni for Target.
Necklace--J. Crew.

This outfit was worn on April 12, so Angus was about 18 days old.  Like all my awesome pants that I have had since I had Rex, I (eventually) stop wearing them when my hips return to normal.  I have now retired these to the basement storage area, but to be honest, if I could find these in a size 8, I would buy them in a heartbeat, they fit that well.

I like the look on my face.  I was probably frustrated with the camera's timer here.

This is my hipster/Madewell inspired outfit that I wore to Rex's second tee ball game (no tee ball gown that day, lol).  It was sort of cold that day, but I know that layers are the way to go as I often overheat (I run hot), so I gave a nod to my love for the prep and slung the striped cardi over my shoulders.

Those J. Crew sweatpant trousers are ridiculous.  They are comfy and awesome, but they had been in the sale section, at the same sale price FOREVER.  J. Crew...folks aren't buying them at the higher sale price, LOWER the price.  Honestly I am surprised they are sold out, they just sat there for months and months and months.

(Ha, I know I bought them at the higher sale price, but I did get the 30% off...and in my defense, I was able to wear it when I was early in my pregnancy without fear of the waistband digging into my belly.)

Speaking of Madewell, the photo of the French woman reading the book from their spring catalog inspired my outfit.  No, it is not an exact copy, but I love the ease of the look, and I think I came close.

No, it isn't green.  But like a dummy, I forgot to put this outfit in the last ROYGBIV post, so let's just pretend that it was part of my "yellow" post.  In fact if you click over real quick, take a peek, and go back in your browser, it will be *almost* like it is in the right place.

Aww...so cute!  Angus was 20 days old here (he was 2 months on May 25, btw).  If you open this photo up, you will see his onesie proclaims that he is indeed the "cutest monster."  ;)

Night, night!!!

On "Target" with Maternity Stripes.

Oh, man.  I couldn't stop myself with that title.  LOL.  Most of you pregnant ladies (or have been pregnant ladies) will know this, but for those of you not aware...besides supplying the United States with easily accessible cheap fashion (Missoni, Liberty of London, etc.), really cheap and cute children's clothing (Circo, Gwen Stefani's new line, etc.), and endless supplies of groceries and adorable homewares that break after a season, Target also supplies pregnant ladies with their own line of clothing, Liz Lange for Target. 

So get it?  On "Target?"  Okay, I'll stop now.

Anyhow, I loved this outfit and plan to exactly replicate it at least once more this pregnancy and then, even though (God willing!) I will have a smaller torso and belly area, I will totally do the look again after pregnancy with the sweater as a tunic.  That is how much I heart this striped sweater/free French scarf/Hue leggings/Target Ballet flats combo.

I was doing the preschool run last week and had bought the sweater as a way of perking myself up (Target is really good at perking me up, anyone else?)...by the end of the trip I felt yards better.

I knew it was true love because the next time I went to preschool I wore the sweater, a mere two days later.  (I rarely let anything I really love wait that long to be worn...)

Anyhow, the sweater does have stripes and as Mr. Dina so kindly pointed out, "it makes you look REALLY pregnant," in the end, I am REALLY pregnant, so happily me and my ginormous Gus belly made our way through the day.

Sweater: Liz Lange for Target, Size Small.  Liz Lange for Target can run big, so definitely try it on before purchasing if you can.  This is one of the few tops I own from her line that isn't an x-small.

Leggings: Hue, Size Medium (I think?).  Bought from Anthro, these are just a nice staple to have.  These seem pretty big as I could hitch them up over my belly, which I can't do with my other leggings (I have to wear them below the belly).

Scarf: Gotta Love The European Magazine Freebie Giveaway...Lolita Lempicka Poly Square Scarf.  A score that I found in the November issue of French Marie Claire.  CW has actually worn it too.  :)

Back when, way back when, in the late '90s, this style scarf was all the rage and I still have all my small square scarves from then...I would really like this style to make a comeback, love the look and instantly dresses an outfit up.  I like big scarves, but wow, they are a tad overwhelming with some outfits.  This one was the exact right size for this look.

Shoes: Mossimo Venda Flats, Size 9.5.  Adorable shoes that "spoke" to me on the day of the sad preschool run/ Target makes me happy day.  They were $25, but I had a $25 gift card (thanks, Dad!), so they were FREE!  LOL.

Mommy Style Monday #17: Cull that Closet!!!

I did a post yesterday in which I reviewed three grey dresses that I own.  Add to that yet *another* grey dress that I also recently wore, I realized I have WAY too many simple grey dresses.  Which then led to me actually looking in my closet and realizing that if I was going to buy the lyric dress (not in grey, come on now...) and the maritime dress, I would also need to re-evaluate whether or not I needed as many jersey dresses as I have.

I think part of the reason I have held onto so many of these clothing items is because I simply run out of time to cull my closet.  I know this is going to sound mega-lame, but after running around after the kids all day, blogging, and doing all the daily "essentials" of my life (that sounds pretty tame, lol), by the time Mr. Dina gets home and can take over the child-rearing and such, I definitely don't have the energy to go into my bedroom and clean (but drink a glass of wine, um, yeah...).

But yesterday morning afforded me the trifecta of awesome...I felt good, Mr. Dina was home and herding children, and I knew that some of the items I wanted to cull from the closet could end up on the JCA Weekly "Sell" post, so I kind of had to get my booty in gear.

So how did all this end up as a Mommy Style Monday post?  Because, admit it, if you are reading this, you probably are both a) a mommy, and b) stuck with a few too many clothing items of your own.

But, if like me, you need an excuse, a valid reason, a push in the behind, this post is for you.  I will even show you some ways of coping with your loss (oh, I know I can't be the only one who has trouble getting rid of clothing because of sentiment, right?).

In order to REALLY be objective, I took a series of photos of myself wearing the jersey dresses, and through the power of Picasa, I chopped off my own head to make the most wise decision for each dress.  I have done this before, but for entire outfits.  I encourage all of you to try this...not seeing your head, just your body in the piece of clothing (and if you want, from all sides) will let you see what TRULY flatters you.

You will be seeing a series of photos that show my insane jersey dress collection.  In these photos you will be treated to: dresses that got a second chance because I ended up liking the way I looked in them, dresses that I want to sell (I think my readers and other JCAs/Boden Babes/Loft Lovers might have some interest), and dresses that I will give away to charity (older, but in still great shape, dresses from places like Old Navy and JCPenney).

 1) Loft Scoopneck Dress with Ruching.  Well, I already admitted to having a huge problem hoarding grey dresses.  Do I really need this one?  Answer: Definitive NO.  It is a nice enough shape, but the bust is too large and the overall length is too short (have enough short dresses, too).  SELL.  $20, Size 8.  See this polyvore for more info, if interested.

2. Old Navy Bright Yellow Pleated Neckline Dress with Bow Detail.  This color is amazing, but I have two tops from old navy that are this color.  The dress is baggy, saggy, a bit sheer, and overall a bad fit for me.  Answer: Definitive NO.  Going to give this one (and a few others that I have not shown here) to Goodwill.

3. Boden Printed Beach Dress.  Oh, how I adore this print.  Too bad the pockets on these are at my widest point of my hips, making it a bit too floppy at the WRONG part of my body.  This one is definitely meant for ladies with more up top and less on bottom.  This one was the hardest for me to part with, but at least I know it will be swooped up by another Boden babe (I like that term, btw).  Answer: NO.  For sale info at this polyvore, size UK 10, US 6, $30.

4. J. Crew Cotton Interlock Kristy Dress.  I have worn this a few times before, but never for the blog.  I could never seem to make it work for me.  The problem had been that I added a necklace.  By leaving the dress and its silhouette alone, the simplicity and the modern lines were able to shine through.  But I still wasn't convinced, so I took two more photos.

From the side.  Short, yes, but that is perfect for the weather around her in the summer.  It also allows me to be a bit "dressier" on errands and the like.

From the back.  Answer: YES.  Keeping this one and look forward to keeping it simply styled.

5. Mossimo Dress with pleated detail at neck and waist.  Bought this at a Target in Indiana a few summers ago.  Love the color and adore the design but was on the fence about whether it worked for me or not.  It didn't...two summers ago when I was still postpartum and nearly 20 pounds heavier than I am today.  I think all the pleating made me feel a bit larger than I was back then, hence my fence sitting.  Still not convinced, so took a pic from the back.

From the back.  It's okay, and I love this style for hanging out during the summer.  Answer: YES.

6. J. Crew Jennifer Shirtdress in Black.  Oh, this shirtdress has driven me CRAZY for a few years now.  I had it in brown and didn't really care for the way it looked on me.  Then I lost weight, sold the brown (size medium) and bought the black and the green in size small.  I wore the green one time, and hated it on me (again???).  Turns out I did it wrong for me.  So what if everyone else can wear this dress buttoned up and long-sleeved.  I can't.  I needed to adjust.  So I opened the lapel ALL THE WAY (while still remaining decent) and rolled the sleeves to the the 3/4 length.  The picture confirmed that I had chosen the correct styling.  Answer: YES.  (Phew.)

Summer Sun-Dressing: Target Edition!

Hi! Today I give you another edition of my summer series on the very, truly awesome summer sundress...Target style.

I don't know what it is about this super-low cost retailer, but they can churn out some lovely summer sundresses. Every women's (and girl's) brand that they carry has some perfect options out there for those sultry, humid, sunny, and hot days we seem to have in superfluity (heehee) around here.

Let us begin!


Dress: Target's Merona Collection, Size 8. Bought last winter for a steal in the clearance section. I know it looks really nice on my shape, but I will be honest with you...it was a bit too clingy and because it was SO humid outside, I kind of felt uncomfortable. I wore this to church, but because my darling CW was pretty awful, I had to go outside with her and there you go...discomfort central. Maybe the early fall will be kinder to me when I wear this dress again.
Shoes: J. Crew Dani suede peep-toes, Size 9.5. The irish moss color is exactly the right hue to match the merona dress.
Necklace: A Chico's Find! :) (My one and only item from Chico's!) I have to say I normally bypass Chico's but a friend of mine was DYING in Palm Springs from the heat and she needed to find some shorts. They didn't really have anything for her, but they did have this necklace. It is a lovely layering piece and I know it will work with many of my wardrobe staples.

Baby is all blurry, look at that...most shots we take are with the flash, but this day it was all natural lighting, so the shutter just captured her slight little movement!

She is wearing all Target, too, btw.

Dress: Liberty of London for Target Girl's (!!!) Sundress, Size X-Large. I wear this mainly as a cover-up and as a lounge around the house kind of dress. It is amazingly comfy.
Shoes: J. Crew flip-flops. I am definitely addicted to J. Crew flip-flops...have them in almost every color, and I find that as a swim coach, I actually have a use for them beyond the summer. Size 10.

Twinsies!
Dress: Liberty of London Martha Grace Halter Dress, Size Small. I bought this after seeing how pretty this print was in baby CW's romper. I find this style of dress is very comfortable and flowy, which was awesome on the day I wore it as it was about a thousand degrees outside. (And you think I am kidding...the thermometer in the car read 738 degrees...and we know that the car. never. lies.)
Shoes: Size 9.5 from Circa Joan and David. Love you, great walking shoes with a bit of edge for this SAHM.

Lady: {Screaming from across the street.} OMG, that is QUITE possibly the CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTEST thing I have ever seen.
Me: {Trying to yell back, not very good at it.} I know, she (CW) looks so CUTE. I think I will keep her.
Lady: {Still screaming.} NO! I mean, yes, she is cute, but I meant your outfits. I DIE! SO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!
Me: {Laughing.} Oh! Well, thank you!

The mommy/baby matching outfits worked their precious power. Hahahaha, they will rule the world with their power!!! (Can you even imagine? The matching outfits going to the UN to try and bring peace to the world...LOL.)


Dress: Mossimo Girl's Dress, Size X-Large. Yes, I might be a bit crazy with my dipping into the girl's section, but at $15 a pop and a great return policy, I am not exactly being daring. I love this dress and found that the belt and shoes really helped turn this dress from being too sweet and young to being a bit more "developed." :)
Belt: J. Crew Elastic Blossoms Belt, Size small. Yes, please...this belt is perfection, exactly what my waist need when I want to emphasize it, but with the frayed and bleached black blossoms, it is very unique and special. When I put it with this sundress, I smiled. It made me that happy.
Shoes: Boden Snake-Print Sandals. Size 41. Nice, light, all leather shoes. If you miss the all-leather shoes that J. Crew used to offer (now only Collection shoes are all leather), then go to Boden. Every bit of them is leather from soles to uppers.


Okay. I am going to show what a geek I am here, so if you want to continue to think of dinagideon as cool and hip (snort, haha, lol), then don't continue reading.

I LOVED the show My Two Dads growing up, and as the single daughter of a single father, I totally identified with Staci Keanan's character (that is her in the pic above--taken in 2007). Last night I decided to do a "where are they now" google search for some of my most favorite characters from '80s sitcoms. And I stumbled upon Staci Keanan and all of her adorable-ness. She is still acting (awesome) and obviously has great taste. :) You have seen this dress before, remember? So, girl, you go with your bad self and keep enjoying these nice, inexpensive Target dresses. (If a Hollywood actress can get thee to Target to find dresses, the rest of us can, too!)

I am still very early in this whole "let's fix Dina's head and heart thing," but knowing that I have an amazing support system is huge. (Tear.) ;)

Fourth Festive Wear!

Okay, so I always have a blast over the Independence Day holiday. Obviously, I get to be all loved and treated well because it is right near my birthday, so by the end of the holiday, I have been wined and dined to the point where I have to be rolled out of restaurants. LOL. Fortunately this year I have two small toddlers who keep me moving, so that helped alleviate some of the inevitable weight gain...turns out that even if you eat fairly well, like salads and such, well, it doesn't really matter as home-made salad equals 350 calories and restaurant-made salad equals (and this is my approximation here) 125,678,301.1 calories. Oh, well.

And then you add on the 5,012 calories that I consume in red wine and you just know that I will have a bit of detox to make up for my indiscretions. :P

Onto the outfits I chose this year to celebrate my dear country's birth...


Wore this on July 5th to go to a local Alexandria community's fair. They had bike decorating contests, beautiful baby contests (baby CW--prettiest brown eyes), and lots of fun in the (hot, overbearing, OMG we are all going to melt) sun. I think it was 103 degrees with full-on humidity, so by the end all of us were dirty, sweaty, and tired. You know I looked fab--ha--not!

Sizes:
Dress: Size Medium. I bought this Mossimo (Target) dress about two years ago and I finally am wearing it. Yes, I wore a poly-blend dress on one of the hottest days of the year. So you know, this pic was taken BEFORE we left for the day. :) You would not want to see the after shot. (And come on--you see the fireworks--how perfect, right? Right??? Worth the poly-blend fainting spell I nearly had???)
Shoes: Size 10. These are the Cole Haan Air Lunetta sandals. They had a slide version, but I found those were a weird fit, but these have a toe hold making them stay on my foot better.
Necklace: Twirled Metal and Crystal Necklace. Umm, still full price at jcrew.com (of course). I bought this at 19.99 plus 20% off at the G'town store. Yes, I am insisting you do not buy it from the website. Please. But that said, isn't it a beautiful necklace???


And now for the sweet shot. Isn't this precious??? Sunglasses are Boden from last summer. BTW, I bought the A.R. Trapp Troubadour sunglasses and received them yesterday. I am in love, and look forward to showing them to you on Monday (hint for Monday's Mommy Style post--using inspiration boards to choose your pieces for your wardrobe).


And now let's reverse to Saturday, July 3rd. (Don't worry, I didn't forget the 4th!)

HOT HOT DAY which means summer sundress time for all female members of dinagideon's household.

Sizes:
Dress: Size 4. Large Ikat print sundress from the J. Crew outlet. For what it's worth, Mr. Dina really liked this dress on me, so I was glad that I purchased it. I still worry the print is too large, but I guess it works. I love the navy blue and white, had no red, but I was trying to be festive. :)
Shoes: Size 10. Old, old, old Born navy sandals. Good on Born for making a shoe that I have literally worn for years that still have plenty of life in them.
CW's dress: Size 2 from mini-Boden. I actually bought this dress when she was 5 months old as I loved it that much. She looks so freaking cute. Those are her Miss Trish of Capri pink/green daisy sandals.

Sizes:
Top: Size Petite 8. This is from last fall, and I am so glad I ordered this color. I have so little red in my wardrobe that I spend every July 4th wondering what the heck I am going to wear that has red in it. This, btw, is one of the very few reds I can wear, a rosy, pinky red, so I am not even sure it counts, but you all DO. NOT. WANT. to see me in a real red. That would make you run away in disgust, trust me.
Shorts: Size 8. These are the fun starfish shorts that are linen (yes, by the end of the evening, they had the horizontal lines on the front of them). I would say that J. Crew could have done an extra inch or two, but at least these shorts weren't of the 3-inch inseam length. :)
Shoes: Size 10. These are the starfish capri sandals from last summer. Quick question: Shortly after posing for this picture, the band on one of them broke where the band enters the footbed...I am assuming the shoe-guy can glue it back in or what...but what should I do re: telling J. Crew? I wore them twice last summer, this would have been my third wear. Do I have ANY reason to expect J. Crew to reimburse me for the repair?

I want to be more active, and I ESPECIALLY want to be more active on other's blogs, but I have been around my computer less and less...which means less and less can be given to my beloved blog friends. Raveneli Blouse Styled by Yours Truly...

I was DESTINED to own this blouse. Here is why. First, I spied its loveliness in the Anthropologie catalog a few months back. Second, one of my favorite blogs, What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear? highlighted it in a post on whether or not Emma Pillsbury would in fact wear it. (Decidedly yes!) Third, on the VERY day I bought it on sale, Dea of The Dea Diaries goes and shows how she wore it. Yep, three times a charm.

And here is a fourth.


Sizes:
Top: Size 6. Could have gone with a four as there is plenty of room throughout, but I kind of like it a little loose. It can still be yours...a few sizes are left on the Anthropologie website. I will go into the details of the top after the next photo (which shows the blouse on its own).
Jacket: Size 8. Love how the schoolboy blazer is structured enough to balance the ruffles and bows of the blouse. Very nice contrast.
Pants: Size 10. Another example of WHY. YOU. SHOULD. NEVER. BUY. CLOTHING. POSTPARTUM. Yes. It is now too big and when I bought them they were too tight. Sigh. Oh, well, at least I think I can dry them in the dryer to take in some inches. You can't really tell how big they are, but trust me, I was doing the ole "hitching up" dance all night. Don't pretend you don't know what that dance is... :)
Boots: Size 9. Yes, I love you, Naturalizer! Best $25 I have spent in a long time. I wear these all the time!

We were going to IHOP and then bowling. Both were fun. Did you know that if you have a kid at a bowling alley, they let the kid "cheat" by giving them this cool metal ramp to give their ball a good ole head start down to the pins? Rex did way better than me and Mr. Dina...and we used to be on a bowling league (no joke--we own shoes and everything!).


So here is the top sans jacket. It is fluffy and bow-tastic, but not enough to make Mr. Jim crack up at my expense or anything, so in my mind, this makes this top a winner! ;) Go, go, Girls From Savoy (they made the top).

Teaching School Last Week...In Real Life Outfits!!!

Yeah. I know it has been a long time. But the in real life outfits are back. I am not promising much (I have seen the photos), but I know you all will still like some of these. :)

BTW, my stupid camera card reader went and died on me last week so I had to go and get some cables to connect my camera to the computer. What a royal pain in the patookus. :) Hopefully I can get a new camera card reader tonight!

My Professor Cardigan Helps Me to Teach School! by dinagideon featuring FOSSIL watches
Oh, I had such high hopes for you...professor cardigan. You look so cute, and I think your scholarly appearance works with so many things I own, but last Monday (5/11/09) you just did NOT bring it. Bad cardigan!

It may be that the cocktail capris are just a wee too big (washer and HOT dryer here you go), it may also be that the green I paired you with was the wrong shade of green (it feels like you both were in competition). So sad. Well, I gave you a second chance (TODAY, 5/20/09) and you have redeemed yourself. Turns out that if I pair you with a scoopneck turquoise top and the fantastic mahali-dot capris you look just fine. I (heart) you again, Professor.


Yeah, I was not feeling it either. That is probably why I look like a teapot. I do LOVE the necklace with the green top. I also realize (for all the haters out there) that I should have put on some powder...that is some serious glow, miss dina. No bottom-half. You all don't need to see miss saggy-knees. I am not cruel. ;)


Outfit Number Two (wore on Wednesday 5/13/09): I know you all will love this one because you all are not blind. Out of the three outfits, number two rocks. It is all retro and fun, too! The dress is from Boden (Spring 2007) and I finally fit into it!!! YAY! It only took two years. When I slipped it on and it fit well, I actually started to dance. I don't dance well which is why I didn't videotape my glee, but just be assured that I was bustin-a-move.

The shoes are Mossimo (Target) from who the heck knows how long ago. They are so cute they should be outlawed. :)

So many of you love this polyvore that I am sort of psyched to show you the outfit. But only sorta. 'Cause I am not feeling the whole outfit here, either.


I wore this on Thursday (5/14/09) last week and I think I need to fix this outfit. I love the gladiola-print cami and the featherweight cardigan together, but I just DO NOT like it with the white denim capris and the strappy sandals. I think I should have worn jeans and a pair of grey flats. That would have looked awesome.

I also HATE my makeup. Paging Casper, Dina calling...I stole your makeup...so sorry!

Any other suggestions on what type of bottom to wear with this cute top and cardi combo?


I did a close-up of my cami for all you all who recently purchased it. I bought a Petite size 8. I am very out of proportion. My top half is very short in comparison to my bottom half. If I had similar measurements of my top on my bottom, I would probably look like a stick insect. People would probably force-feed me. :)

I prefer for tops to hit my high hip (unless they are stretchy) because I am nowhere near my size on top as on bottom. I could have bought this top in a regular size 6, but then because of how it hits the hip (in the middle), I would have had to unbutton the bottom buttons and that would just look stupid. So petite 8, here I am. :)

I hope all of you who bought it will love it. I definitely can see wearing this in the summer with a cute pair of shorts and sandals...
