Boden: Fall/Winter 2015 is Here! And Boden Icons!

Hey, you all.  I am back from Florida. 

CW made a beautiful Princess Anna.  I am pleased she was pleased after all the saving up of money (it's expensive to be pricessified), and having to deal with a five hour delay going there (hello, 3 am arrival) and a cancellation on the way back (come on, really?).  I am happy to go back to Disney, but it's going to be a few months, at least.  ;-)

I am off to a cruise for my (big, OMG I am how old) birthday with my aunt at the end of this week, so if the blog goes fully silent, blame lack of internet access.  Which is fine, I know.  I just am used to being super plugged in.  It's probably good for me (at my age, lol) to be unplugged from time to time.

Okay, so that out of the way, onto Boden.

1. There were quite a few new arrivals on Monday.  Couldn't write about them then (travel day) and couldn't write about them yesterday because of...

so I am writing about it today. 

There are quite a few lovely items and it seems I must have missed many of them in my original picks post way back when.  Or they didn't have these in the preview.  I don't know.  These multiple rollouts are to hard for me to follow (at my age, lol).

2. The folks at Boden must be doing well since the current promo being emailed around and on the back of the catalogs are for 11% off with free ship and returns.  I haven't seen one that "low" in years.  Probably 2010?  But...and because I have access to it, and so do you, the affiliate program has a promo for 15% off with free ship and returns (over $49), which is pretty great, so use it if you need it, of course.  I probably will (after I have paid for the princessification of Little Miss CW).

3. So in this last catalog they sent out there was an insert for the "Boden Icons" collection, which is like the Boden Limited Edition of yore (RIP).  It is intriguing, but it was no secret that I was a HUGE fan of the Limited Edition stuff. In fact, I have only ever sold one item from my collection, and that was because there was a fit issue.  I on the regular wear my beautiful silk jersey dresses from that line.  Here is a look at the lookbook, courtesy of the Telegraph.

The Belgravia dress is gorgeous, and I am a fan, but woah, that 250 pound amount is roughly equivalent to $375.  The other pieces are lovely and if I was an independent gazillionaire I would happily purchase most of it and put in my gorgeous MASSIVE closet.

This is a "huh" piece, the Spitalfields Coat, which at 400 pounds maybe should have plaid that lines up properly?  I suspect this is intentional, but my seamstress eyes are really bothered.

OOTDs: Casual Substitute Teacher.

Hi, all!  Before I start, I want to let you know that I heard from the Boden affiliate regarding Boden's Black Friday sale.  It's decent, but not as amazing as I have seen in the past.  This definitely means Boden is doing well this year, which *yay* for them, but for sale shoppers, *boo*.  Anyhow, it is still better than we have seen for the most part this season, so worth it if you have items you would like to purchase.

Alrighty, onto some casual substitute teacher looks.

I normally go for more dressy when subbing, but the past few weeks of subbing have included working with active little ones (think second grade and younger--and chaperoning one field trip), so I knew I wanted to be ready for anything they could throw my way, which means going for sneakers, tunics, leggings, and the like.  I have had dressier substitute looks, but those were when I was with older students, so I am saving those looks for another post.

I am going to dispense with the anecdote of the day as there really isn't much I can tell about my days subbing, plus it makes writing these posts a touch easier.  Yay for ease, right?

Day: Thursday, November 20, 2014.

Where:  Chaperoning Rex's class's field trip to the Air and Space Museum.

Ease of Wear: (3.5 of 5 stars--5 being the most easy to wear.)  I think the potential for comfort was there, but because the jeans rise was a touch low and the shirt's tails were a bit high (read: short), the outfit was not as comfy as it is pictured here.  In reality I had to untuck the shirt and kind of hide it behind the vest to maintain this look.  And since I am a fussmonster, this bugged me all day.  I probably should have just given up the vest and worn it as a shirt/jeans/cute shoes combo instead.  Oh, well.

At least the new balance 620 sneakers (did my initial review of them here) were insanely comfortable for running around after my son and his kind of crazy second grade friends (said as a devoted mom of a wild and crazy second grader herself).  ;-)

Cool Factor: (3.5 of 5 stars--5 being the coolest.)  The shoes are the coolest part of this outfit.  The shirt will always be my favorite Liberty print shirt, ever, and will be cool to me until the day I die.  Mr. Dina loved this outfit.  But he also wears white tennis shoes unironically, so take that into consideration.  It really is just a nice "mom chaperoning a field trip" outfit.

Day: Friday, November 21, 2014.

Where:  Subbing Computer for PK-1st Grade.

Ease of Wear: (4 of 5 stars--5 being the most easy to wear.)  This outfit kept me warm, which was most important since it was STUPID cold that day, and as long as that happened, I could have been wearing a burlap sack and been comfortable.

The rest of the outfit allowed me to properly keep up with the youngins I was teaching that day, and at no point did I feel like the shoes were too high (had purchased those last year from Boden), the pants too tight, or the cardigan too short.  I definitely will be wearing this combo again to substitute.

Cool Factor: (4.25 of 5 stars--5 being the coolest.)  I love the stained glass cardigan with a mid-century modern art look to it.  Feel like that element really makes the outfit.  I think the scarf was tied improperly for the look, though, but really, I needed it tied as close as possible to my neck to keep me warm.

Day: Monday, November 3, 2014.

Where:  Subbing for Kindergarten.

Ease of Wear: (5 of 5 stars--5 being the most easy to wear.)  Seriously so comfortable.  Perfect for working with the 5-years olds I had all day.  They were exhausting.  I tip my hat to every kindergarten teacher out there, especially those of you without aides (they don't have aides in K at the school, only Pre-K).

The dress is part jersey so easy to wear, and when have leggings not been very comfortable?  The ancient tennis shoes are clearly fun, but kept my feet feeling great all day.

The long merino wool cardigan coat is one I bought from J. Crew in 2005.  I thought the silhouette was nice for our Virginia falls (not too warm, but just right for the cool temperatures we normally receive), but the real reason I bought it was because it was called the "Arlington" coat, I believe, and since I am from Arlington, I couldn't resist.  Still a great choice since it has held up for nine years and still looks brand new.  Ahhh, old school J. Crew quality.

Cool Factor: (3 of 5 stars--5 being the coolest.)  Well, I'll be honest with myself...it isn't especially cool.  It is very fun, and there is no doubt I enjoyed wearing it all day, but yeah, it is very kooky.  LOL.

Made by Me File/OOTD: High Waisted. (Vintage Simplicity 7688.)

Hi, all!  Happy Sunday!

Gonna do the ootd portion of the post first, then go into detail about sewing up the shorts.

Day: Thursday, May 2, 2013.

Where:  Preschool Run/Little Gym/Lunch with friends.

Ease of Wear: (4 of 5 stars--5 being the most easy to wear.)   Since the shorts were crafted to fit my body exactly, and made from a nice soft stretchy cotton sateen, I was very comfortable all day.  Too bad my hip really hurt (more about that below in the anecdote section) because had I been feeling fine, this outfit would have been a 100% winner.

Cool Factor: (2.5 of 5 stars--5 being the coolest.)  High-waisted shorts had a resurgence last year in fashion, and likely are going to be present this summer as well.  I like the look, a lot, but because they have been done up in a pretty floral and not a distressed denim, they are not "cool," just lovely and pleasant.  And that works for me.  :)

I really liked the animal print bedazzled bow ballet flats from Boden with  the outfit, they worked perfectly with the outfit but have a teeny edge that allows them to be a bit unexpected.  Originally I had planned on sandals, but switched to the flats at the last minute.

Anecdote from the day:  (If you are really not into "wah-wah, woe is me," and that's fine, of course, you may want to skip this section.  LOL.  Trust me.)

I don't like being vulnerable here at my blog, but ever since May 2, I have been feeling really blue.  It all started on the evening of May 1 when my left hip felt like it had been wrenched out of place.  I have had issues with my hips since having the kids (the last few weeks of CW's pregnancy I had to use a cane my hips hurt that bad), but never enough to justify a visit to the doctor.  Honestly, I am just tired of having to be "fixed" all the time.  Fortunately I took some ibuprofen the night of the 2nd and was fine the next day, but it still zapped my energy and spirit to be in pain.

This "blue" period has absolutely nothing to do with my blog, my kids, or my family, in fact it is all on me, and my perception of how others perceive me out in the real world.  To put it mildly, I have been feeling like a misfit that no one likes. 

Every day I amble around, trying to keep my cool and a smile on my face, and in return I get doors slammed in my face (while holding the baby), pushed out of the way by strangers, tailgated by drivers who are angry that I am only going five miles above the speed limit, yelled at by administrators at my son's school because I was hoping to have Rex sit for two minutes in extended day so I could take CW to the bathroom (while holding Angus), and being snubbed by the other moms at pickup time when I go up to talk with them*.  Of course I am human and not a robot, so in all of these cases I have (as soon as I am alone) cried.  As soon as the tears stop flowing, I don't just brush it off and pick myself back up, either.  I wish I could, but honestly, it has been easier to face my bedspread and shut out the rest of the world.

From time to time I do meet other people in this area who are genuine and sweet and caring, but they are definitely few and far between.  I hate that where I am from is like this, full of "me first" people who are only looking out for number one and don't care who they step on to get there.  I think of the examples above there are only two instances where it wasn't a "me first" situation, the one with the school administrator (though she didn't have to scream at me, of course), and the one with the other moms (as much as it hurts to admit it, I am probably not cool enough, especially since I don't have the tight "lululemon butt" that they all have--I am not even kidding, btw, can bounce a quarter off those tight derrieres).

I realize I am not going anywhere, can't leave my home of thirty years and don't really think I should feel I have to in order to find kindness, but I do know that as I am aging, it is all starting to tire me out.  I just don't have the right stuff to ignore the a-holes and be okay with being treated like dirt because I am not fast enough, assertive enough, or cool enough.  Ugh.

*this happens only at Rex's school, the same place I went to as a kid, btw.  CW's preschool parents are super nice and friendly.  I am a little worried that it is going to be like this for the next thirteen years--Angus is going there, too.  I will probably figure it out soon enough, and find other moms who do like me for who I am, but it feels like I am invisible most days.

(BTW, those of you who read the above, and stuck through, thank you.  I just needed to get it off my chest.  I have a few good friends who know not everything is not rosy in my life, but in general, I have to hide my true feelings every day and a lot of this has been building inside of me.)

I have a stash of vintage patterns in my collection, some gifted to me and some found on ebay (so cheap, btw), and though I want to jump right into them, I want to make sure I can really sew before cutting into them.  That said, I knew that I could at least give Simplicity 7688 a try.  This 1968 pattern is pretty awesome, btw, since it has three lengths of shorts/pants in one package that can be customized to your height. It also has an insert on fitting for trousers, which is really valuable to me since I have the biggest problems with fit on my lower half.  With the assistance of that chart, btw, plus some internet searches (Colette has a great tutorial, too), I made these shorts and other pants exactly right for my legs/hips/crotch depth.

I had planned to make the "Jamaica shorts" length, but after examining what came with the pattern, I realized that was the one pattern that was not included (this happens with old patterns, pieces may go missing).  No biggie, though, since the short shorts were in there, and armed with my info on lengthening pants/shorts, I decided to turn the three inch inseam into a much preferable five inch inseam.

The only thing that ended up being a bit off for me was the waistband to crotch length.  I am tall, and though most of my height is in my lower half, after spending many hours figuring out what is going on with my body for perfect alterations, it turns out that I am shorter than I thought between my natural waist and crotch.  The next time I make this pattern, I will probably go ahead and cut it down to the "average" height length, while maintaining the five inch inseam.

To fix how high the waistband was going to be, I decided to fold down the waistband which meant that instead of being "grandpa-waisted," I would end up with a shorter (and less ridiculous) "high waist."

I didn't want to lose any length off the leg, so instead of hemming it like you normally should (folding under about 1/2 inch, then another 1/2 inch to get a 1" inseam), I decided to use some bias tape to face the hem.  Basically I attached the single fold tape to the front of the shorts, then folded it under and secured it in place.  A nice bonus is that if I ever decide to change up the shorts, I can flip the tape up, and voila, a different look.

Fwiw, I decided to wear the hem down that day.

Patterns back then were all one sized, and the one I used was for a 29" waist and 40" hips.  I was nervous the 40" would be too small, but it fit exactly right.  The 29" was a good call, just the right ease to keep these shorts super comfortable.

BTW, this pattern came together fast.  I cut, prepped, and sewed them all in one day.  My current pattern, though, has taken me so so long.  (Admittedly I have done a lot of extra things to the top, including underlining and facing all raw edges, but still, ugh.  At least I can finally say it is done, though!)

OOTDs: Sarah and Westminster. Reviewed and Worn.

Good Thursday evening, all.

I almost just wrote "good Wednesday evening, all."  Umm.  No.  It is Thursday.  I bowled today.  Seriously suffering from major Mommy brain today.  Redonk. 

I am continuing my quest to wear as much of my lovely fall/winter 2012 Boden items before the clearance sale starts (Monday, maybe???).  I would have loved to have worn many of these earlier, but unless we have an exceptionally cool fall, a good majority of what Boden offers for sale in their fall and winter collections are much too heavy to wear around these parts until late November/early December.  If I could wait to buy them until they went to clearance, I happily would, however, a lot of their items sell out nice and early in the season (see the Westminster Scoop Tunic below for proof of that) which leads to purchasing items that I won't wear in real life for a good three months or so.  In fact, the Alexa dress (which I did at least review early on) is too warm to wear even now.  That may have to wait until January with the way our weather has been lately (mid 50s/low 60s everyday). 

Okay.  Blah, blah, blah.  Here are the outfits I wore the last couple of days.  

Scoop Tunic Dress. I wasn't sure how I was going to style this tunic, but I definitely knew it wouldn't actually ever be worn as a tunic, since this clearly looks more like a dress on me.

I ordered the size 6 long after seeing the measurements (very forgiving hip numbers, which is always my problem area).  I am glad I did since the 6 works very well for my frame.  If you are a bit bustier up top, you *may* have to size up since the top is a bit more fitted and there is only a side zip (BACK ZIPS, Johnnie, repeat after me, BACK ZIPS!) for ease of access.

In the end, I paired the tunic with a pair of leggings from Spanx (love you, Spanx for making such lovely leggings), the Britten tall boots in brown from J. Crew (this time not worn to be "horsey"), and extra "unique" accessories.  I wasn't sure about the newsboy cap from J. Crew (seen in this very famous J. Crew Paris catalog shot), but the red of the cap was the exact shade of red from the *tunic*, so I gave it a go.  It may be a bit too much, but honestly, I felt great with it all together.  And since feeling good is about half the battle in fashion, at this point, if others dislike the look, I just don't care.  ;)

Even with my hand on my hip, the Westminster scoop tunic dress stays at a nice, modest length. (I was a chaperone on a preschool trip to a concert starring the Disney cartoon characters--not exactly a place for thigh high minis.)

The fabric is viscose, which I am not necessarily a fan of, but whatever Boden did to this fabric made it wear much better than I expected it to.  I thought that the dress would be so wrinkled and messy by the end of the day, I would have to take it off upon my return to home (well, I did take it off, but only so I could nurse Angus--not nursing friendly, breastfeeding moms).  In reality, the dress wrinkled far less than most of my linen items.

I have another viscose top (the Lavish T-shirt) that I wore bowling today and it also wore much better than I anticipated.  Still wrinkled a bit, but definitely not horribly.

No hat here, just in case you are so distracted by the tomato monstrosity that you can't focus on anything else.  ;)

The tunic/dress is nearly sold out in this colorway.  There are many more available in the other shades, but I don't care for any of them, in fact, I think the floral versions are kind of ugly (I know, I said it, I don't like a floral).

Detail of the jewelry and the print of the dress.  You can actually sort of feel the print under your fingers, which means that you should definitely wash this one on delicate in cold water and inside out.

Sarah Dress.  The night before we went to dinner, and because it has been so lovely here, I decided to wear this dress without tights or a coat.  I had hoped to accessorize this gorgeous dress with scarves, tights, and the like, but only time will tell if that actually becomes a need here.  (Not even holding my breath.  I am beginning to wonder if 50% of my coats are useless--and no, not just because I have too many coats--lol.)

Anyhow, this one was near to selling out in my size and in the color I wanted (the other color of this print is lovely, but I have a lot of dresses in that coal/red/yellow shade).  The other colors are in this kind of odd print (I said, I know, I don't like a print, c'est shock!).  So instead of taking a chance, I bought this when there was a fairly good discount going (may have been 25% off--which, btw, if you use Q753 will get you that % off, too).

The dress is a jersey fabric and of a nice weight.  This could be worn year round, which is fab if you work in an office where you can wear business casual and need something great for all seasons.

I decided to wear a pair of Madewell boots with them, they looked cute together, but this shot doesn't really show how lovely the boots look in real life.  (The first photo of this outfit does, though.)

I should have worn a regular belt with this dress the way the model in the catalog does.  It would have given the dress more definition from the back.  It doesn't look so bad from the front, but from the back, that is a whole lot of in your face print, huh?

I am glad I bought the 6 long, but if I reordered, I would possibly buy the 8 regular since that would be a bit shorter and a touch looser.  The jersey accommodated my hips fine, but if I even glance at something salty the day before, I will absolutely have to bring out the spanx hosiery.

Westminster Scoop Tunic and Sarah Dress.  You should not wait on the Westminster print in this tunic if your size is available...it won't be come clearance time.  You can wait for this print in the Sarah dress until clearance (unless you wear a smaller size), but be aware that this shade will sell first, before all the others.

Boden Weekly Review Roundup: So. Many. Dresses.

I hope everyone is doing well this Wednesday evening.  :)  I am managing, but I will honestly be surprised if this publishes before 11 pm.  (Still counts as Wednesday, though, and for many of you who live out west, it will be the much more reasonable hour of 8 pm.)

This week saw much awesomeness in Boden land, including the dropping of the Autumn 2012 Preview.  I did a blog post on it here, and I recommend taking a look around.  I have a few items that I will for sure be ordering and quite a few that I will make note to get the moment a good sale/my budget is in the black comes around next fall.

I am terrible about promising that I will get posts done by a certain date, but I do at least get them done eventually, so do expect that I will do a Boden Autumn Preview 2012 Picks Post soon.

Also, there is a wonderful resource that Poppy's Style clued me into for any of you who are looking for past season Boden clothing.  If you would like, head on over to Facebook and "like" the Boden resell page, you will be able to check out any listings for any item that you may have missed in the past.  I may even be posting some of my items there (helps it reach a larger audience that way).  *Remember when I attempted the Boden Buy and Sell over here?  LOL.  That lasted for what...all of five weeks or so?*

Speaking of facebook, how many of you think I should have a facebook page for My Superfluities?  I have been hesitant to start one, but I do see the benefits of having it...easier for me to put up "preview" photos of my ootds, quicker updates for when Boden has good coupons/sales/new styles, etc., and it allows me to connect with people easier on the go (I can respond to FB on my smart phone and kindle fire easier than commenting back here at this blog).  Do let me know and maybe I will add that to my list of things to accomplish.  :)

Regular Boden:

Everyday Summer Dress.  I hope you all can tell why I brought this pretty dress to Miami.  :)  I had planned a tropical/sea theme for the trip, and this dress clearly suits the tropical theme well (those are palm fronds in the pattern).

I will definitely be reposting this outfit when I get around to my ootd posts for the trip, but I figured some of you would like to see this dress on a "real" person, so I got it edited for this post 'specially.

This is the size 6 regular and fits like a glove, the exact right measurements for me in the bust, waist, and with a little bit of extra wiggle room in the hips.

The color is stunning, I rather like bright yellow-green, but if you aren't a fan, definitely steer away from this one and go for her more "muted" red sister.

The shoes, btw, are the Boden Essential Wedges.  I did a review of those here at this post.

The rest of the outfit is all J. Crew.  (BTW, my love of the fedora is BIG in Miami, I truly felt at home with all the folks donning theirs, too.  Definitely not a lot of fedora love here in the DC area, sadly!)


Everyday Summer Dress. I am not a fan of the floral versions, but clearly I am in the minority, as those colors are selling out while the version I wear is still fully in stock.

Strappy Beach Dress.  There was some discussion over here about my dilemma regarding the sizing of this dress.  Because I am a crazy woman, I decided to buy the size 8 Regular even though the garment measurements were not actual garment measurements (they didn't put the info in correctly).  Then the reviews started to pour in, and every single one said the same thing...the bust is FAR too large while the rest of it is fine.

So I got the 8 regular and it fit, but really loosely all over, and especially through the bust.  So I went ahead and reordered it in a 6 regular, which is the one you see above (and the one I wore yesterday on the preschool run).

From the side.  It is still too large in the bust, but only cup wise, not so much underbust wise (the empire waist is maybe a half-inch too large).  I found a way to solve it for now (as a nursing mom it is kind of nice to have the extra room just in case I "fill up," if you will) and when I do stop nursing, I will get the sewing machine out and tailor it smaller.

The skirt portion fits beautifully, and was very comfortable.  As an added bonus, this barely wrinkled, even though it was part linen (probably because it was lined in cotton).

I love this print, very original and definitely happy.  I felt like I should have a tiki drink in my hand instead of my kid's backpack, but ah, well...

You can't see my solution, but it's there...a very small safety pin holding the two fabric cups together at the mid-bust area.  It worked and there were no intentional "flashes." 

If you are a nursing mom, btw, the straps can be pulled to the side for nursing, very easy in fact, so I give the thumbs up for those of us with that very specific need and yet who still want to wear dresses.


Strappy Beach Dress. This dress is really low rated (not the lowest I have ever seen, but lower than a lot of the other dresses). However, the green version is all sold out and the other three colorways are on backorder. If you really want the blue one that I own in the size 8 regular RIGHT NOW, I could mail you mine instead of sending it back to Boden (still need to get to the post office!). (But I am sending it in tomorrow or Friday, so let me know fast...)


Regatta Dress.  Clearly Egyptomaniac is my sister by another mother as she literally has bought the same exact dresses I have this season (we have at least four in common!).  I adore her in the navy version, she looks beautiful!  (I also love the red accessories!)

I have not yet had a chance to do my review of this dress (I bought it in orange) but should be able to get one done by next week.


Floaty Jersey Dress.  Again...another dress I own that Egyptomaniac owns.  :) 

She models the pewter bud colorway.  Her hubby chose this one for her to wear, as he really likes it on her...and she says it is her favorite, too, so clearly there is mutual love for this dress in their household.

I have the moss bud version, and a quick word of warning if you want to get that color...it is a BRIGHT lime color as the background, not a muted green/navy...it is still really pretty, but it may be too bright for some of you.  I will put that review up next week so you all can see IRL then.


Border Print Tunic.  The great gams of Poppy's Style are on display under the pewter version of this tunic...looking good, lady!  :)
