OOTDs: Festive. One. Two. Three.

Merry Belated Christmas!  Or if you are one of my Canadian or British readers, Happy Boxing Day!

Anyhow, I hope all of you had a lovely holiday.  We definitely took it easy, just a bunch of merriment with the immediate family.  I made a feast last night that turned out pretty well.  I am always wary of being the sole chef for big family dinners, since I tend to believe that something will taste utterly awful, but it all ended up tasting really yummy.  :)  Yay!  I think the combo of a good free range turkey and a fantastic brine helped make the main part of the meal perfect.  (I bought both the turkey and the brine at Whole Foods, for those of you interested.)

The next few days I will be posting my "festive" outfits.  I basically tried to up the volume on my December outfits as a nod to the holiday season.  Lots of sequins, winter white, red, green, and shiny bits everywhere.

I wore this on December 10.  Rex had a school-wide pageant* that I figured I needed to dress up for, but I probably could have worn jeans and a tee and no one would have batted an eye.  (Such is life in the United States, big ole free for all on clothing.)

Whatever.  We also took our Christmas card photo in these outfits (you'll see it soon), so there was an extra reason to dress up.

*I wrote about being annoyed that night at the top of this post. 

I wore this dress last year while pregnant.  This dress fits a bit looser now.  :)

Christmas Card!  Angus is the perfect present.  LOL.

I wore this on December 18 for Rex's second pageant.  The difference between the two pageants is that this second one was just his class, so it was a far more intimate affair.  Way way way less annoying.  (And I cried.  Yes. Cried.  When Rex did his part, he sang it.  I thought he was just going to read lines, but he sang instead.  And with perfect pitch.  I couldn't believe it.  I would love to post the video of him singing, but I can't for privacy reasons--other kids are around him, but it was amazing.  Love proud Momma moments.)

Since it was a Tuesday morning, I knew that I had the preschool run, but wanted to wear a dress for the pageant, so I brought a change of clothes so I could be more comfortable (read: able to nurse) after the show was done.

This dress is comfortable and very soft and easy to wear, but dreadful for breastfeeding.  :)

I last wore it here, and yes, I was pregnant then, too.  (Although I hadn't announced it at that point.) This dress also fits far better now that Angus is in my arms and not in my belly.

After the show, I changed into this outfit, which made nursing easier.  The top has well-secured sequins and is somewhat loose.  The pants are my go-to "comfy but look kind of cool" Pure Collection pants.

The Sixties Heels are on sale, for those of you in love with them.  ;)

(I bring those pants with me whenever I need to change halfway through the day.  Love them.)

My yummy Boucle de Souffle Jacket opened.  (I like wearing this jacket with sequins--here while pregnant, and here when experiencing a major wardrobe mishap a couple of Christmases ago.)

OOTDs: Mississippi Missus.

Good Sunday!  I hope everyone is well.  :)

Before I dive headfirst into the many Boden reviews I have (most positive, a handful not so), I wanted to get the ootds published from my last trip to Mississippi.  Unlike last year when we stayed there for nearly eleven days, this year was a mere eight total, so I was happy to have far less to pack and to think about.

Anyhow, since I have done this before (2009, 2010, and 2011), I don't think I need to go into much more. 

Travel Day.  I love the idea of looking fabulous while traveling, but the reality of flying with three young children means I can't go all "7FAM jeans, button-down fitted shirt, crisp wool jacket, and high-heeled boots." 

So instead, I take three lovely and comfortable pieces, wear just a touch of makeup, and fix my hair just so, and am happy when I make it through the process relatively unscathed.  (Which we did--the first travel day was wonderfully easy, for once.)

I had read the temperatures in New Orleans would be in the 70s on the first day, so I decided to pack some tees for us to wear once we landed (it was cooler in DC by twenty degrees).  The tees have a hand-printed bicycle (I used a stamp I found at AC Moore), with the words "hipster" and "mini hipster" below the bikes.

I hadn't originally planned to make a tee for CW but she saw me making mine, so she asked if she could have one, too.  I actually like hers better.  :)

The second day we were there was mild enough to go without a coat, but I knew that a sweater was necessary.  The sweater was reviewed by me here, and I have to say it has held up well, and looks wonderful with a variety of different colors.  Of course, this shade is nearly sold out (as is much over there at Boden).  The Effortless suede boots were my go-to the entire time I was in Mississippi, and I was glad to have brought them.  They are also almost completely sold out, but if you like them, I reviewed them here.

The Madewell scarf I received for a song, as it was a popback sale item with an extra 25% off.  The cords are a wonderful color, and even though I usually stay away from J. Crew pants, I have lucked out this season, since the ones I have bought have fit well and are special and unique.

BTW, the whole day was very relaxing, a bit of shopping, a bit of eating, and a bit of visiting.

Two days later (didn't get a good shot of the in-between outfit) was Thanksgiving.  We do a very easy midday meal, so none of us ever really "dress" up, but we do at least make some effort.

The collection pencil skirt in windowpane was one of my favorites from the J. Crew Fall lookbook, but OMG, the original price was so expensive.  I can see why they *wanted* to charge that amount, as this skirt is made from the softest virgin wool imaginable, but what J. Crew *should have* done was to mark it at a bit above what they wanted to get for it, and I guarantee they would have sold out immediately.  Instead, the skirt sat in the sale section until it was priced where most of us could afford it.  (And at 30% extra off, at least in my case.)

The rest of the outfit is old, except for the shoes, which I mentioned in the last outfit.

No cardigan in this shot.  I cannot express to you all how much love I have for this tee.  These were from the holiday 2007 season, and I have two of them, this one in silver, and one in a gold stripe.  If I was only allowed to have two tees in my closet, I would immediately grab these two and not look back.

I wanted to wear the Carriage coat dress again this year, and since I have plans to try it like it was styled by J. Crew (see here), but knew it wouldn't be cool enough to do so down there, I came up with the idea to wear it with lightweight leggings, some black boots, a tank (not shown), and the Madewell storyteller scarf.

And a bag that holds everything a mother of a baby and two kids might need while at a nice restaurant in town.  ;)

I wore the dress here last, while pregnant, so it is nice to see that even though it fit me then, it still works on me now (although the a-line shape is much more obvious now).

I am throwing this in here because Angus turned 8 months while we were there.  :)

Just another simple outfit from another simple day.

The sweater is the dreaded dream v-neck sweater.  For those of you who are not a JCA, the dream sweaters are dreaded because the fabric pills nearly immediately, usually if you decide to look at it the wrong way.  Now I have no idea how I lucked out, but this year's version in this lovely heathered mint color has barely a pill on it.  Sure, it is a bit "lofty" but I don't need to get out my sweater shaver and I have worn it at least three times since purchasing it (mainly lazing about the house, that's why this is the first time you have seen it on me).

Two days before we left, CW, Angus, and I went to town to get some things.  I love this Liz Lange nursing dress, especially since the colors and pattern seem right for fall festivities, but I wanted to see if I could make it work as a skirt with a buttoned up cardigan.  It almost works, barring the bit of dress you see poking out of the top of the cardi.  (I wore it last here, more traditionally.)

I didn't really grab photos of the outfit the day before we left or even the day we left, but I did ask Mr. Dina to grab a photo of the food I ate at Mother's.  Now I know that this food looks kind of gross, but WOW, it certainly doesn't taste like that.  In fact, as much as I enjoy cooking Cajun myself, and have done so for years, the food at Mother's is my personal holy grail, and if one day I can manage to cook a jambalaya like Jerry's jambalaya (my fork is pointing to it), I would be exceedingly thrilled.

I also kind of dig what Angus is doing there in the back.  Any quotes?

Since I knew I wouldn't get a photo of the last day's outfit, but I really dug the sweatshirt I was wearing, I wanted you all to at least see that, so Mr. Dina grabbed this shot of me.  It is from JC Penny's and looks and feels way more expensive than it actually is.  I liked it so much that I went ahead and grabbed it in heather grey on Black Friday (it was almost half-off, so cheap went down to insanely inexpensive).  I am wearing this in a small, and I would say it fits well (I wear a size xs in J. Crew for reference).

OOTDs: The Frock Fantastic.

I love a good dress, especially a good summer sundress.  Even through the heat, and the humidity, and the (occasional way too bleeping often) power outage, I adore summer and would prefer to always have highs in the 90s to highs in the 40s.  I don't know if that is because I was born in CA and raised in VA, or if I am just crazy (probably the latter), but fall and winter just don't do it for me.  ;)

In fact, by this point of summer, I would have normally exhausted every single dress in my closet and would be returning for seconds, but this summer I have had to say "so long and see you later" to the vast majority of my dresses because they are not nursing friendly, and while I am fine with that, I do have to admit to missing a bit of the fun I have summer sun-dressing. 

All of the below dresses are nursing friendly*, which means I have given them a go multiple times because I am so happy that I can wear something less constricting than shorts and a tee (I far prefer the airiness of a dress to shorts and tee in the humidity we have here, in CA the shorts/tees were absolutely fine). 

*Well, I did manage to get away for a couple of hours to dinner with my bro, so I was able to wear a nursing (un)friendly dress.

If you have been over at my facebook page in the last few weeks, you have already seen all of these outfits, but stick around, I added some additional detail shots, etc., so you haven't seen it all *quite* yet.

Target.  Oh, how I adore you for your easy, fun, and cheap fashion.  I wear you, I love you, and when I am done with you, I donate you.

This dress reminds me so much of this skirt by Boden.  (I realize the colors are different, but the basic look is very similar.) In fact, Target has a skirt just like that one, and yeah, I picked that one up, too.   I loved the Boden skirt but never bought and then it was gone.  Poof!

UPDATE: The eagle-eyed lolcatgirl let me know in the comments (below) that the dress and skirt are dead ringers for this skirt and dress from J. Crew.  Thank you...I knew that the Boden skirt was more of a distant cousin, but really couldn't figure out which skirt and dress I had seen that were the parents.  Here is what the skirt looks like on Tabitha.  :)

I will probably keep the skirt the longest, for as much as I love the dress, it more serves a purpose for me than is a "home run" the way I feel about so many of the other frocks in my wardrobe.

We were heading to go to Brick Fair, a big huge meeting of the minds of men, women, and children who really get into building Lego models.  I was not one of the minds, although mine did marvel at the creations.

Oh, the Boden maxi dress.  How do I love thee?

I have now worn this dress and its sister (the purple/green one) and its cousin (this summer's multi-hued one, also at the bottom of this post) multiple times already.

These dresses do hit a homerun for me, which is surprising to me because I lived through the 90s and wore maxi dresses and skirts all the time.  As I aged I associated the longer hemlines with my less satisfactory sartorial past and gave them up completely until I tried the Boden jersey maxi dresses last summer for the first time.  You all, I will never let these go.

The kids and I were headed up our local path to our local shopping center to do usual errands, you know, bank run, dry cleaner run, grocery store visit, McDonald's.  So exciting.  I will say that this outfit is more than fine for the 1.5 mile round trip we take when we do this (about twice a month).

I liked my makeup and hair that day.  The earrings are from the J. Crew factory and I was surprised at how long they lingered in clearance.  I think I got them for six or seven dollars.

Another Saturday, another nursing friendly dress.  :)

Headed to sushi buffet with my brother, CW, and Angus with a side trip to the uniform store for Rex's school uniform for next year.

I forgot how much the Caroline Dress wrinkles, but I guess a bit crumpled gives it a bit of a safari chic look, huh?

The Palazzo Dress from J. Crew got almost no love in the blog world, but from what I could tell, somebody out there liked it as it sold quickly and in all the colors.  This is the bohemian red color and it is unbelted here.  I kind of dig it unbelted, but I didn't actually wear it out this way, I just wanted you all to see you could unbelt it and it wouldn't look terrible.

I lied up above when I said there was only one nursing unfriendly outfit.  Oops.  This one is as well.  I was headed out with CW for a girls night out, so I knew that I wouldn't have to worry about it as Mr. Dina had Angus during that time.

Here is the way I wore it out.  This is a very very VERY comfortable dress.  If you wanted a really expensive nightgown, I would highly recommend this one.

I had to size down to an extra-small.  The small was HUGE on me, even through the hips.

This is the nursing unfriendly dress I spoke of initially.  I wore this just two nights ago to go out with my brother to Ethiopian food.  :)

We took Rex with us and Mr. Tiny (yes, Angus) and CW stayed with Mr. Dina.

It was actually cool enough (read: below 85 degrees) for me to wear a lightweight cotton cardigan over top the dress.  I like the look, but probably won't replicate this again, since I now see the darker green in the striped cardi is not close enough in hue to work with the dress pattern.  In real life the outfit read differently.

I was super excited to not have a diaper and wipes in that clutch, btw.

Hey, it's a Boden maxi.  And a fedora!  LOL.

Remember the derecho?  Who could forget it?  Anyhow, to escape the heat the day after the derecho occurred we went to Kingstowne (shopping center) to grab lunch and get into some air conditioning.  This dress made my mood significantly happier, although it should be clear that I am definitely not cool as a cucumber, even if it doesn't appear that I am sweating in the above photo.

Those Cole Haan Air Catalina sandals are amazing.  Not only are they glittery and girly, they are insanely comfortable.  If you can grab one on ebay, I highly recommend them.

Dah...the baby is so cute!  I am definitely sweating.  And this was inside the Burger King, so that should tell you something about air conditioning power when it is overused...meaning it has none.  Sigh.

I love this Garnet Hill dress.  I wore it to go out with my brother to the Winesday event at our local Whole Foods.

If it seems my brother and I have been hanging out a lot, we have...and I couldn't be more stoked.  For a while there his work schedule was crazy and we only saw each other randomly and not all that often.

Okay, this one is O-L-D...from right after Angus was born.  I threw it into this pack because I am wearing a literal nursing dress from Target here (under a Target cardi from years ago).  I have to give Target major thumbs up for making dresses that make it easy to nurse and still be somewhat private about it (it has a panel and a built in shelf bra).  I still wear a cover, but my sides aren't exposed, which happens when I wear tees (I lift the tees up for nursing access).

I also own this in a blue shade.  I only like these dresses for their function, and will be very quick to sell them when Angus is nursing less (likely at one year of age--I am an extended breast-feeder, but I don't exclusively nurse past one year).

I still have a tiny baby belly here.  Angus was probably just around a month old, which also would explain the hair color (hadn't had a chance to get out in the sun and really blonde it up).

J. Crew Review: Ink Dip Popover, Corduroy Shorts, and Abstract Floral Scarf.

You all...I actually wore part of this outfit today.  I know for the more savvy outfit of the day bloggers, this likely happens on the day of the actual outfit being worn, but I haven't been that good about it since, oh, about the very beginning of this blog (way back in '09!).

However, I have been good about putting the outfits up every day over at my Facebook page, so definitely check it out if you prefer more real-time posting of ootds.

Anyhow, I decided I would just go for it and publish the outfit because it is review day over at J. Crew Aficionada, and I wanted to make sure I could have this post ready before the day ends, so my JCA friends could have a look at three J. Crew pieces, especially since two of them are on sale.

Onto the reviews and then the actual outfit worn:

Ink Dip Popover, Neon Persimmon, Size 4.
Corduroy Shorts, Pale Turquoise, Size 10 8 (just checked--oops!).
Abstract Floral Scarf, In Store Only (as far as I can tell).

I am planning on clipping this image for polyvore because the scarf has no image on line and I really want to make these outfits into polyvore sets.  :)

When I tried this outfit on in the store (all three of the pieces reviewed where bought at a real store), I wasn't sure if I could get away with the scarf and the shorts and the shirt, but I kind of ended up digging it.  I know not everyone would go all nuts for the bright on bright on floral, but I figured since color is my thing, I should just go for it and stop over-analyzing it.

The scarf is really beautiful IRL.  I really want the skirt but figure that it will go on sale...and I can't even wear it right now since it is a bazillion degrees outside.  Heck, I was even beginning to overheat in this ensemble, and it was only 80 or so when I put this on.

The scarf is wool and very lightweight, but very long and full (many tying possibilities).

I am surprised this scarf is a fall item, but since I wore this outfit last fall, I clearly don't care if my seasons don't really line up.

Info on the pieces in this photo.  I plan to wear this outfit, as it looks here, but in the early fall, when our highs top out at 70 or so.  I sort of feel like this is a "California cool" fall look (but can also be worn in spring, more appropriately, too, lol).

The ink dip popover is really a great item to have in the closet.  It is really light cotton, which is fab if you live in a humid area, since it can keep you nice and cool.  The top can be dressed up for fall and winter and spring, though, with longer pants and skirts, and with a jacket over top.

I was able to nurse easily enough by undoing all the buttons, so if you are a nursing momma, big thumbs up.

The sleeves are nice and long, but I preferred them rolled up today (it got to the mid-90s).  Warning...this does wrinkle easily, so bear that in mind.

This fits true to size for my J. Crew perfect shirt size, so if you know that, you will know what size to get.

This top's color is NOT timid.  It is quite bright, but if you dig neon, this will be right up your alley.

This is my 90 degree version of the outfit.  I added the Sperry boat shoes (got them at the Catholic school uniform shop!) to tone down the look (like what I did in the 70 degree outfit by adding the light colored Greta suede wedges).

The shorts are really well made, a nice cord fabric, and my favorite part, a very subtle elastic waistband in back.

These shorts remind me a lot of shorts my Opi (grandpa in German) and Uncle Tom wore to take us surfing in California when I was a kid (yes, I learned how to surf as a little girl).  So I wear this outfit with some sentiment.  ;)

I always buy size 10 in J. Crew shorter shorts, I need the extra bit at the waistband so I can pull the shorts lower so the inseam isn't so super short. (So it turns out I didn't buy a size 10...must be the elastic waistband that allowed me to pull it a bit lower.)  I wish J. Crew had longer inseams on their novelty shorts, wouldn't that be wonderful, tall ladies?

Mommy Style Monday #29: Pregnant, Postpartum, and Nursing, Boden Sale Edition.

I was asked by a blog friend, K., if I had any advice for her on choosing perfect pregnant/postpartum/nursing styles from the upcoming Boden clearance sale (set to drop anywhere between this Friday and next week).  She is currently 13 weeks pregnant, which is the beginning of the second trimester.  She wanted to plan for her pregnancy and future postpartum/nursing needs by seeking out the best prices on the very best options that Boden offers.

Having (obviously) just finished my pregnancy and (most of) my postpartum period wearing a whole buttload of Boden, I definitely know what worked for me and what should work for the vast majority of pregnant ladies.  There are some things that Boden does lack, and I will be mentioning them, but if you are savvy, and you do plan well, you should be able to grab the best prices on items that can work for the full ten months of pregnancy and beyond.  :)

I specifically chose items that can work year round, with the exception of the most hot and most cold days of the year. 

Below the photo of each item, I have included a link to the item, along with an explanation of why it works for either pregnancy, postpartum, or nursing.  I will also make note of if it will work for any other period, for instance, if a top works for pregnancy, but can also be useful for nursing.

Onto the picks!

Pregnancy:

Border Print Tunic.  Did any of you suspect I would go here first?  LOL.  I truly believe this is a magical clothing item as it worked on me during pregnancy, during the postpartum period, and will still fit me well five years from now.  The stretchy jersey fabric is amazing and stretches to accommodate a belly but doesn't looked stretched out after pregnancy.  It is worth the full price, but you can always get this with at least a 15% off.  However, there are likely to be at least a couple of popbacks on this item during clearance time, which means my friend could try and get it for the best price of the season (probably will be 35% off if past years are any indication).

This is not a great top for nursing, however.  As much as I love it, the longer length proves to be a hassle to pull up and the v-neck does NOT pull over enough for easy access for the baby.

Kimono Dress.  Like the Border Print Tunic, this is a great fabric for a growing belly, with the added bonus of looser armholes.  This is a nice feature if you happen to gain weight in your upper body, shoulders, or arms in pregnancy.

This would also be lovely during the postpartum period since it is super soft and a bright and cheery fabric. 

Again, not the best choice for nursing, for the reasons I listed under the Border Print Tunic.

I suspect this will go on deep discount, seeing as it is 40% off now.  It may stay at 40% off for a while, but if the stocks stay high, my friend can get it for much more off when the second cuts happen (usually three weeks post the start of the clearance).

Leggings.  Yes, I do mention the Boden Maternity leggings, but later.  For most of my pregnancy, I wore regular leggings.  Here's why...I happened to have a belly that sat super high and regular leggings fit fine on my legs and right beneath my belly.  Now, if your belly grows and sits lower, you will likely need maternity leggings earlier, but for most folks, especially in the first and second trimesters, you should be able to get away with normal leggings.  :)

These will work for nursing as well.  I do NOT recommend these for the postpartum period, especially if you had a c-section.  Your body needs soft, NON-constricting waistbands, and these elastic bands, while normally comfortable, can feel noose-like right after having the baby.  Do your body a favor and wear the loosest fitting items, at least until your body heals.

Leggings are such a staple that these MAY NOT go to sale.  If that happens, you can still grab them by calling the company (at clearance, any "normal" priced items disappear).  Or you can wait until the fall stuff comes on-line and buy it with whatever promo happens to be around then (it usually starts off at 15% off with free ship and returns).

Plait Trim Top.  Again, a non-maternity item for pregnancy.  I wore mine well into my third trimester and fell in love with the stretchy, soft material.  I also love how the neckline forces the eye up and away from the belly.

This top will work for postpartum AND for nursing.  It's a great buy.  It is nearly sold out, and I doubt the savings will be significant in clearance time, but still, 35% off is better than full price. 

Special Day Tunic.  I have this in the yellow color and I adored how pretty it made me feel.  It worked great with jeans and leggings, but now that I have had Gus, it works well as a mini-dress.  If you are a bit shorter than I am, you could wear it as an actual dress after you have the baby.

I believe this could be worn postpartum, but I hesitate to suggest that because of its blatant "pregnant" style.  Since you carry a lot of extra weight in your middle postpartum, it could make you look still pregnant.  Once you shed that weight, the concern goes away, but bear that in mind if you want to wear it post-baby but pre-loss of baby weight.  :)

Boden Maternity does NOT go to clearance sale for the current season (for most of the items, anyhow).  This means the spring/summer maternity items will go to clearance next fall.  That does mean, though, the fall stuff will go to sale this upcoming week.  That works very well if you are going to have your baby anytime between October and January!

That said, the Boden Maternity stuff does sell FAST if it goes to clearance, especially to the very audience looking for it, so be quick if you see your item in the pink "low stock" box.

Postpartum:

Alfresco Top.  Yet another one of my favorites from the postpartum period.  This soft as silk top is able to stretch, but does not look like it is straining in any way if it goes beyond its garment measurements.  Its v-neck and empire waist highlights what is, for most postpartum women, their thinnest parts. 

This top would also likely work for a pregnant lady (not the late third trimester, though) and definitely will work for a nursing mom (wore mine last week, in fact).

This should go on some deeper discount but is also popular, so will need to be picked up within the first few days of the clearance.

Evie Dress.  I felt so good in this dress three weeks after Angus was born, I truly thought I had a whole new body.  In reality, I did still have many lumps and bumps, but the silk jersey fabric skimmed over my curves instead of clinging to my curves.  You may not want to leave the house after having the baby, but it is really nice to have a dressy option if you do end up going out for dinner (which you should, btw, you 100% deserve a nice night out!).

Great dress for pregnancy, I wore its precursor while in my early third trimester, but definitely not a great option for nursing as the v-neck is not capable of being pulled to the side.

Maternity Leggings.  Yes, I put the maternity leggings here, instead of in the "pregnancy" part.  I really, truly feel that the soft, non-binding, high waistband of these leggings are so SO nice for the first week after giving birth, that I want and insist all pregnant women buy them.  I was SO happy I had them to wear home from the hospital.  :)

Now if you do need the higher coverage leggings earlier, obviously these are fantastic for the pregnancy, but like I said above, many of you can get by with regular leggings for 3/4s of your pregnancies.

These will probably not go on sale, but their current price is more than reasonable.  

Wrap Jersey Top. I actually have seen this top on a non-pregnant lady, and she looked so comfortable and happy, it immediately struck me that a postpartum woman would feel wonderful in this top.

This could also work for pregnancy (stretchy fabric again) and nursing (pull the top up rather than moving the v-neck to the side). 

This is literally the only color left in stock.  It will likely be the only one to make it to clearance, and it won't be super-super cheap.  I do know you will get a lot of use out of it, though!

Nursing:

Drapey Jersey Cardigan.  I added this cardi with the rest of my nursing choices because the extra fabric there in the front is AWESOME for covering up baby when you are nursing.  I know some ladies can easily nurse with the goods all out there (and it is protected by my most states, so you all know), but I am not one of them, so I always have a cover-up with me.  This cardi, though, could easily take the place of the cover-up, so bravo for that.  Definitely not a summer option, especially around here.  ;)

Obviously a cardi can work whenever, so enjoy while pregnant and postpartum!

This will make it to sale and should make it to a great price.

Elegant Summer Maxi.  I am not crazy suggesting you get a maternity dress for postpartum...I promise.  Hear me out.  Since Boden is notorious for making shorter length maxi dresses (hello ANKLE length, lol), the extra length the fabric has for the belly will make the dress nice and long up front (and much more like a traditional maxi dress).  But here is why it is the perfect nursing dress...it can be pulled down from the straps for access to baby's breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. (I show the back of the dress...if the straps on the back are defined and separated, you can do the pull down maneuver, if the straps are not visible on the back and instead you see a swath of fabric, the front strap portion cannot be pulled down--not good for nursing).

This one can clearly be worn during pregnancy, and postpartum, but keep it around for later.  :)  It comes in a nice neutral so that in winter you can dress it up with a sparkly jacket or cardi and call it a night out.

This will not likely go to sale, but if you fancy longer gowns, then its current price will probably be decent enough to justify it (especially if you will wear it often).

Favourite Jersey Maxi.  Like the one above, these straps can be pulled down for easy access.  I own this one in the pink pansy color and loved it for that very reason.  I plan on wearing this for many years to come, but this was an added bonus.  :)

You can definitely wear it pregnant, but bear in mind that it will be shorter in front the further you get into your pregnancy.  It is definitely soft enough for postpartum, but it might be a touch too difficult to get over your head, so if your body is saying no to putting it on, just don't.  LOL.

Will go to clearance in this shade, but will sell fast.  I am willing to bet on that one. 

Gathered Front Vest.  This has the pull down straps that I prefer to use (I don't mind tugging the shirt up, but it leaves my belly exposed, which I don't care for) and has the added bonus of being infinitely layerable.  Great on its own with some jewelry in summer, wonderful in the fall and spring with cardi on top, and perfection in winter with a jacket and scarf.

Usable in pregnancy, but may be too short for use in the last bits of pregnancy, especially if you have a long torso and/or bigger belly.  Definitely nice and cozy for postpartum.

This one should make it to sale, and be a decent price.

Oil Cloth Slouchy Bag.  I decided to add a bag to my "must have" lists because this one is so utterly right for the nursing momma.  It has a fabric that can withstand spills and gross bathroom floors (use a cleansing wipe on it afterwards), plus its large size and long strap mean that it can hold a lot (pumps! wipes! 5 size 2 diapers!!!) and can be worn across the chest (hands free, woo hoo!).

Yes it can be used by all sorts of women, even worn the silly way that Vanessa is holding it.  :)

It is fully stocked in the floral shade above, but sold out in the ditsy pattern in the lower photo. 

Shirt Dress.  Made from linen, it isn't my favorite fabric (bonjour wrinkles!), but it is definitely exactly what a nursing mom needs, easy access and a cool fabric.  This one has a placket that extends deeply, so you can unbutton the dress as far down as you need to (for me, I typically need to undo four or five buttons).

I don't recommend this for either pregnancy or the immediate postpartum period as those awesome easy access buttons will be gaping like mad with growing or shrinking bellies. 

This will make it to sale, but not at a super great price.  I have noticed Boden's linen items sell fast, too.

Strappy Beach Dress.  I love love mine, but only once I found the right fit.  I am a big fan of the straps which make Angus's life easier because he doesn't have to wait for food as long (these are the pull down type of straps).  Unfortunately all colors are sold out except for the top shade (still lovely, though).  I do not expect there to be a great reduction on this one even if a color pops back during clearance.  For all the sizing issues people had with it, the dress sold like hot cakes.

Not recommended for pregnancy (early pregnancy, maybe) or postpartum (possibly after a few weeks gone, though).

Notes on Sizing
I say in jersey fabrics you should buy your normal size if you are postpartum or nursing.  If you are pregnant and want to wear it pregnant, buy normal size if you are fine with not wearing it the last few weeks OR buy one size up if you want to wear it all the way to the due date.

Boden Maternity is sized generously.  I always take a size 4 in their dresses, tunics, and tops, and was taking a 6 in their maternity leggings.  I did NOT give their pants a try because they got pretty dismal reviews and I already had a stockpile of AWESOME duo Maternity (JCP) pants from my prior pregnancies.  I could have sized down to a 2 (!!!) for some of the dresses and tops because Boden gives a lot of room for growing bustlines, which mine did not (grow, that is).

In regular fabrics, the decision is harder.  I would say size up one if you want to wear something immediately after birth, but plan on getting a tailor to help you bring the item in once you have lost all your weight.  If you have never had a child before, I highly recommend waiting until you know what your body does.  My body does return to its normal waistline fairly quickly and I don't have porn star sized ladies (sadly, lol) ever, even at Angus's most hungry.  But I knew that from my past experiences.

So if in doubt on sizing, especially with non-jersey items, don't get it.  Boden will likely make something just as lovely and be on sale when you need it in the future.

Boden is Lacking?
No shorts!  I lived in my maternity shorts when I was pregnant with both CW and Angus (thank you, freaky warm winter).  This is a big oversight for all of us warm-blooded American women.  (They really don't have much in the way of shorts for non-pregnant ladies, so I am not all that surprised.)

Great Prices Elsewhere
Remember ebay.  Many great past season jersey items are available there, so definitely look into that avenue if you so desire.
